NOTICES:
*Safety of our Students: It is important for the safety of our students and local residents that all parents who drive to school in the mornings and afternoons are adhering to the road rules. We ask you all to consider the following: - Do not speed on our surrounding roads as many families walk to and from
school and this compromises their safety.
- Do not park on the zig zag lines at the front of the school as this impacts on our students safely crossing the road.
- Do not park across the driveways of our neighbours, as this will disrupt access to their private property. As a school we suggest walking or catching public transport to school to where possible. If you have to drive, there is often ample parking spaces a little further away from the school, which may also alleviate the congestion and stress of the morning. We thank you for your cooperation on this matter and your consideration of our local community. **The 2018/2019 Academic Year begins on Monday 10th September 2018.***Shoes and clothing donations please! If you have any shoes/plimsolls/wellies or tights and socks that your child has grown out of, please can you bring them along to the Reception classrooms. Thank you!****Exciting Last Minute Club Opportunity for year 3, 4, 5 and
7. We are excited to say that we have a new Club starting next Friday (4th May). It is called Create Club which is a platform for children to freely explore and delve into their imagination through creative play, arts and crafts. It will run for 9 weeks and costs £25. If you are interested please email primaryclubs@school21.org.uk.
*****Equipment - Parents please ensure your child comes into school with all the equipment and food they will need for the day. The front office will not be responsible for taking things to classroom as this is disruptive to children's learning.
School 21 students make the case for OracyThis week a small group of students from Y4 and Y5 were invited to attend a meeting in the committee rooms at parliament with Voice 21. The event, Speaking Up, was hosted by Member of Parliament Emma Hardy who used to be a primary school teacher herself. Many other MPs dropped in and out of the event to contribute their opinions, including Dame Alison Peacock, CEO of the Chartered College of Teachers and Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School College Leaders. The meeting was about making the case for Oracy to have a higher status in education across the country, with the eventual aim of encouraging the set up of a committee of MPs to work on making this a reality. The session was jam-packed with speakers who all talked passionately about the importance of talk in teaching. We were lucky to have two short slots where students spoke. IK made a speech about the importance of Talk Guidelines and recommended that the MPs adopt these to stop unruly arguments during parliament sessions. Alexia then gave her Spark Speech about the issue of bullying to
demonstrate first hand the power of Oracy. After the contributions were made, Ms Hardy opened the discussion and the IK, Alexia, Nyla, Temi, Mimi and Zain held their own amongst a room full of adults, using their talk protocols to build on the argument for teaching Oracy in every school across the UK in a deep discussion that lasted for 2 hours! The feedback from all of the adults involved centered around the professional attitudes, confidence and eloquence of the children. We are immensely proud of them!
Ready, Steady, Grow! This week in Reception, we have begun our new project: "How do we all grow on the journey of life?". We have enjoyed looking at baby pictures of ourselves and talking about ways that we have changed. We even got to meet a baby and ask lots of questions of his mummy. We have also welcomed our new pet caterpillars into our classes and will be watching them as they grow over the next few weeks.
A Whale of a Time Year 2 have been deepening their understanding of this term's texts, 'How the whale got his throat' and 'How the leopard got his spots'. Working in our table groups, we have discussed how the main characters in our stories change from the beginning to the end. After creating an outline of our animal, we used thesauruses to collect better language to describe our animals. Hanging in our classrooms these word banks have helped us to write our own version of the story.
Fantastic Florence!
On Monday Pankhurst class continued exploring medicine through time with a trip to the Florence Nightingale museum. We met Florence and learned about her amazing life, and had the opportunity to dress up as nurses and soldiers from the Crimean War. As well as this we saw the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and went to a fantastic playground! Mandela and Kandinsky class are very excited to also go to the museum on Friday. As well as learning about Florence Nightingale, we have been continuing to explore our new story 'Baba Yaga and the Black Geese'. We are becoming very confident storytellers!
Primary Maths ChallengeOn Friday 23rd March Akshaya (Year 4), IK and Jacky (Year 5) represented School 21 in the Mayor of London's Primary Maths Challenge tournament at Willowbrook Primary School. At the tournament they competed against other schools in shape, arithmetic and code breaking challenges. Unfortunately they didn't make it through to the final stages but they showed tremendous amounts of grit, spark and professionalism in a really tough competition. They were a real credit to themselves and the school. Thanks also to Ms Shreeram for accompanying on the trip and Miss Fahie who
organised the Maths club.
Year 3 put their best foot forward. On Wednesday, the children of year 3 became explorers for a walking tour around London. On the journey, which took them past Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and along one of the Thames' bridges, the children spotted and sketched many of London's key landmarks. The children showed grit by walking cheerfully through a brief rain shower and showed a real curiosity about the world around them. A particular highlight was when the children were treated to sighting of the Queen's guard parading down the Mall by Buckingham Palace. This trip helped
contribute to the children's understanding of how culture can shape a city and they have since artistically recreated London's skyline.
