WELCOME Welcome back to the new term of CSL! As you will appreciate, when CSL is done well, it rigorously stretches our students’ intellects, creates new opportunities for their connection to communities external to campus, but also challenges students’ often naïve assumptions around ‘helping’. Our community practitioners are truly co-educators with us in this task, and invite our students into new modes of solidarity with Edmonton’s civil society organizations and the people with whom they work. We owe our sincere thanks to our instructors, committed community partners, and to all those who make CSL such a potent and impactful learning experience for many. Our Humanities 101 program, for instance, is going from strength to strength, operating in three settings: Tuesday nights on campus, Wednesday afternoons at Wings Shelter for women, and now also at Amity House (with free childcare!) on Thursdays. We would like to thank Shingarai Mandizadza for her work last term, and welcome Tasmia Hai, a PhD student in Educational Psychology, as our new as our new Evaluation Coordinator. Finally, we are thrilled to have our new CSL intern, Campion Cottrell-McDermott begin work with us. All the best for this term. My name is Campion and I'm a third year Linguistics student with an interest in the intersection of healthcare and social services. As an avid fan of the Community Service Learning department and the experiences it's provided me, I'm so excited to be CSL's winter intern. Tasmia Hai, Evaluation Coordinator I am a 1st Year Ph.D. student in the School and Clinical Child Psychology program in the Faculty of Education. I have over five years of research experience in both clinical and community settings evaluating different programs. My current research interests lie in understanding different mental health disorders in children and adolescents. For my doctoral research, I hope to better understand mental health concerns in children who have had concussions. PATHWAYS PROGRAM Pathways allows UAlberta ARTS students to experience and reflect on a rich and varied set of experiences with Edmonton community organizations. Pathways is a journey through the non-profit sector composed of three integrated parts:
Students are welcome to attend an information session on February 13th (room #430, Arts & Convocation Hall) to learn more about Pathways. APPLICATION DUE: March 1, 2019 COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS will receive a wage subsidy from the CSL program to offset 50% of the cost to hire a summer student for a 14-week internship (May-August, 2019). If your organization is interested in participating, please visit our website our contact Jill. HUMANITIES 101 Here we go again! All classes are up and running and we have some exciting news. This term we have a Thursday evening class off campus that is being held at Amity House with the support and partnership of Capital Region Housing. This class includes free childcare! Amity house is generously providing care for over a dozen children in their childcare facility. We quickly reached capacity in both our Tuesday and Thursday evening classes and have opened up a waiting list. Folks can use this link to add their name to this list. The theme for the Tuesday class is Politics of Fear. It is said that we are living in an era where political campaigns use fear to influence voters. This upcoming semester we will explore what fear is and how fear impacts our day-to-day interactions with others. We will also ask questions about how fear shapes the decisions that impact us. The theme for the Thursday class is Politics of Inclusion and Exclusion. Humans organize themselves into groups. Together we will explore how groups are formed, what keeps them together, and what breaks them apart. We will ask questions about who is included and excluded from these groups, who makes decisions for the group, and how decisions are enforced. And on Wednesday afternoons our theme is Women Moving Together. Each week guest instructors will introduce us to a different group of women to explore how they have organized and worked together (both past and present) to make change. Lisa & Kelsi, HUM 101 Coordinators PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Free Footie's mission is to provide vulnerable kids with the opportunity to play in a safe, accessible and inclusive environment at no cost to them or their families - because when kids are empowered through play, their families, their schools and their communities are empowered as well. In the 2018/2019 season, Free Footie has nearly 4,000 children playing on 250 teams in Edmonton, from soccer and basketball to street hockey. Free Footie wouldn’t happen without its partnership with 60 elementary schools in the city where teachers, principals and school staff volunteer their time and skills to coach. Free Footie believes that the more time the kids can spend with these incredible role models, the better, but Free Footie also doesn’t want to burn people out by asking too much. That’s why this Winter 2019 term, Free Footie has partnered with Education 100/300 students to serve as volunteer coaches and support to the schools. The hope is the students will give the school staff coaches a bit of breathing room and an added shot of energy at the end of a busy day. Likewise, Free Footie hopes students that take part make meaningful connections with potential employers or people who can give them strong advice as they move forward in their teaching careers. Long term, Free Footie sees CSL as crucial partner in helping kids in need access Free Play! Further, Free Footie is working with students from Marketing 455/655 to support team sponsorship. The hope is for students to come up with some great marketing material, ideas and maybe even events that encourage a wider community of businesses, groups and individuals to become part of the Free Footie family by sponsoring a team of 15 kids for $1000. Welcome to CSL, Free Footie! |
