The oneness of diversity ... amplified

Babel is a mind-blowing work that highlights the oneness of diversity using language as its medium. Tasmanians with a first language other than English bring their distinctive words, intonations and tones together to create a sound installation of choreographed language.

From Afrikaans, to Arabic, German, Japanese and Hindi to Hungarian, Spanish and Vietnamese, these languages play, dip, dance, pause and dance again. They are presented on a long abandoned floor of a well-known Hobart office building where audiences can wander through at their leisure.

Creator Glen Murray, composer Heath Brown and lighting designer Jason James present an aural experience like no other.

Launceston is where you will find a world of dance

Launceston is centre stage for a program of dance as three of Tasmanian's leading companies present three very unique works as part of Ten Days on the Island.

Stompin's FULLY GROWN

Fully Grown invites audiences into a cosmos created in Launceston’s John Hart Conservatory in City Park where dance and multimedia tell the story of evolution from the big bang to present day and beyond.

In our world there are stargazers, adventurers, philosophers and inventors. There are trees, plants, planets and earth. There are complexities beyond what we can possibly imagine.

Celebrating 25 years of Stompin, performers both past and present will captivate their audience and take them in search of the things that connect us all.

Tasdance's Fragile Matter

Created by internationally acclaimed Greek dance company Jukstapoz and inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s epic film The Great Dictator, Fragile Matter uses dance, theatre, storytelling and puppetry to create a unique dance-theatre experience.

This entertaining, high energy performance has been around the world, finding a political and social relevance wherever it goes. Audiences will be stirred by the poignant significance to current political and social events, and moved by the humanness brought to the characters.

Using the body as metaphor for war and unity, eight embattled dancers rally, resist and break out in a work that is both fiercely physical and intimate, with a sound score to match.

Graeme Murphy's The Frock

In a unique meeting of the traditional and the technological, two of Australia’s foremost dance creatives, Graeme Murphy AO and Janet Vernon AM collaborate with Tasmania’s Mature Artist Dance Experience (MADE) to bring to the stage a dance theatre work like no other.

Spoken word, song, soundscape, installation, costume and machine are used to create an innovative theatrical experience that embroiders together a tale inspired by photographs from ensemble members in their “best dress”. The Frock is a patchwork of personal recollection and aspiration that expands on ideas of how Australians lived, have loved, why they dance and what makes their hearts sing.

“The Frock is neither a dress nor a gown, it is an entity and like other invaders from the ‘mainland’ this frock held unknown consequences – even months in the ‘quarantine of layby’ could not reduce its feral potency.” – Graeme Murphy AO
