SLDL October Newsletter

The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. CGU student veterans are invited to stop by for coffee and conversation at Jenkins Courtyard next to the Burkle building. This is a great opportunity to meet other student veterans!

Stop by the Office of Student Life, Diversity & Leadership (SLDL) for banana splits, root beer floats, and ice cream sundaes/cones. Meet your SLDL staff and other students and be entered for a raffle! 

National Coming Out Day & National Indigenous Peoples Day 

Monday, October 11th 

  • National Coming Out Day (U.S.). For those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, this day celebrates coming out and the recognition of the 1987 march on Washington for gay and lesbian equality.
  • National Indigenous Peoples Day, an alternative celebration to Columbus Day, gives recognition to the indigenous populations affected by colonization.

MCAPS- Returning to School with COVID-19

Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services is hosting a drop-in support space for students readjusting to campus and for processing the ongoing stresses of the continuing evolution of the pandemic.

Thursday, October 14th | 12 PM

Join experts from Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services during this session specifically for graduate students. At some point during the graduate school journey, most students will encounter imposter syndrome. This session will equip you to navigate through those times. Hope to see you there!

As we approach Dia de los Muertos, SLDL wishes to commemorate and honor losses during the pandemic. Please stop by SLDL this week to contribute your photographs of loved ones or email them to student.life@cgu.edu for printing.

Dia de los Muertos- Global Pandemic Altar

Monday, November 1st | 3 PM - 5 PM

Visit SLDL for the unveiling of the altar for Dia de los Muertos to reflect on and honor those lost during the pandemic. Light refreshments will be provided.

International Students

Negotiating Cross-Cultural Boundaries for International Students, CGU + KGI  (Empower Center)​ 

Wednesday, October 13th | 12 PM - 1 PM

Join Rima Shaw from the Empower Center for a workshop specific for international students on Navigating Cross-Cultural Boundaries. Become better equipped to navigate different power dynamics and communicate clearly with this critical session. This session will be virtual.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop

Friday, October 15th | 12 PM - 1 PM

SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. During the session, we will cover information on what OPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission.
