Top 100 Golf Courses "BiteSize" – April 2018

Time waits for no man, or woman, and it’s hard to believe that it was only a few weeks ago when Patrick Reed claimed his first major title and was helped into the green jacket by hapless Sergio Garcia, whose wonderful Kevin Costner impersonation earned him the nickname of Tin Cup after the Spaniard hit five consecutive balls into the water on the par-five 15th, tying the highest score ever taken at the Masters.

It seemed to take an eternity to card that record-equalling 13 – almost as long as the film sequence – but it was definitely more entertaining than waiting for some players to pull the trigger and actually hit the putt. The USA has been our main focus during April. We’ve rolled out the first two phases of our Best In State rankings and the process will continue for the next few months. Our editor also sampled golf and wine in the Rioja region of Northern Spain.

Golf and Wine in La Rioja – and beyond

We were recently invited to visit the province of La Rioja, located next to Álava in the Basque Country, where the city of Logroño in the Ebro valley is at the centre of the wine trade in the famous grape growing region. It seemed like the ideal opportunity to discover just how good the golf product was among the vineyards of northern Spain.

Four Englishmen tried their luck with the Scottish weather and took advantage of an offer to play the new Ailsa course in March. Would the new version live up to the old? Fortune smiled on us and, despite snow drifts that day in parts of England we were treated to blue skies and crystal-clear views and temperatures above freezing for the first time in days.
