The SLDL office hopes to engage students, faculty, and staff in ways
that promote and develop an inclusive and diverse environment.
We oversee student clubs and the Graduate Student Council, promote student engagement, host events and workshops related to diversity and leadership, advise international students, promote mentorship, and manage health insurance enrollment. Black History Month 

Black History Month is an annual celebration of African Americans' achievements and their central role in U.S. history. This year's theme is, "Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity." To learn more about Black History Month, visit history.com.

The Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA)  

The Office of Black Student Affairs is a cultural center and service unit for all seven of The Claremont Colleges. We offer a range of programs, services and activities for students of African descent enrolled at the Claremont Colleges. These include identity based workshops, skill building activities, mentoring, arts engagement, heritage month programming and a range of collaborative events in partnership with 7C colleges, departments and organizations.

2021 Kravis Concept Plan Competition  

Each year, the Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University hosts the Kravis Concept Plan Competition, an opportunity for alumni and current students of the Claremont Colleges to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experienced judges with the chance of winning seed funding to further those ideas. Finalists in the virtual 2021 competition could win up to $9,500 in prize money.

Sprintax Open Tax Webinars

Given the current challenges of remote students trying to access tax information this season, the Sprintax team will be hosting a series of free open tax webinars once again to provide helpful information around nonresident tax filing obligations.

We have set up a series of tax webinars across the season and you can find the details and registration links below for each (these are all in EST). Please feel free to share these details with your international population and they can register for the date and time that suits them best via the below details or you can decide to highlight just the dates that make sense for you!:

The Drucker Difference and Your Familiy Business

Wednesday, February 3rd | 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM 

How can family business continuity be used as a force for good? Cindi Bigelow, CEO of family-owned Bigelow Tea, and Professor Pramodita Sharma, the Schlesinger-Grossman Chair of Family Business at the Grossman School of Business at the University of Vermont, will share their insights at the second seminar in "The Drucker Difference and Your Family Business" series on Wednesday, February 3. Attendees will have a chance to engage in small group discussions led by Interim Dean Katharina Pick and Professor Vijay Sathe.

SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. During the session, we will cover information on what OPT is, and the application process including eligibility rules, timeline and required documents for submission.

CWR Qualifying Exams Preparation Weekend

The Center for Writing & Rhetoric is offering an event just for students at the qualifying exam stage. Designed for students doing timed exams, written assignments, dissertation chapter drafts, and portfolios, the event will provide the options of either dedicated work time with peers or a combination of work time and facilitated sessions on exam preparation topics.

We are excited to present a hybrid event for the 5th annual OBSA Black Intersections Conference: Justice and Black Joy

This year we welcome digital content of ANY kind—including but not limited to video performance and presentation, digital documents, power point presentations, art, mixed media and other work that broadly fits the theme(s) “Justice and Black Joy” for a special exhibit. Each year our goal is to highlight the many accomplishments of Black students, faculty, staff and alumni while engaging in dialogue around issues and ideas surrounding Black identities, lived experiences and forms of expression­­. Media will be uploaded to a platform for public viewing.

We invite you to bring your skills and passions, whatever they may be, and we will work with you to empower you to create something that supports the Black Lives Matter movement and to give you the confidence you need to know that you can continue to do so after the completion of the hackathon.

CWR Students of Color Writing Retreat 

Sunday, February 21 | 8:45 AM - 4 PM 

The Center for Writing and Rhetoric has recently started offering Students of Color Writing Retreats. With a Writing Consultant facilitating breaks and debriefs, this retreat will be a collaborative space for students of color to mutually support themselves in all stages of the writing process and gain invaluable feedback for their work.

Registration for this event opens two weeks prior to the event date and closes the Wednesday before the event. Information for joining the event via Zoom will be distributed to registrants on the Thursday prior to the event.

OBSA Black Intersections Conference: Justice and Black Joy​

Monday, February 22nd - Saturday, February 27th 

Attendees will be able to navigate the exhibit on their own time throughout that week alongside chatrooms and streaming experiences, culminating in an  closing zoom-based workshop with Professor Carolyn Ratteray (Pomona, Theatre & Dance) and special guests on the conference’s final day.

The event is free (there are no associated costs for presenters or attendees) and open to the public.

How to use the Library as a Graduate Student is a two-part workshop series co-hosted by Kendra Macomber and Adam Rosenkranz, Librarians from The Claremont Colleges Library and FLOURISH in your First Year program.
In this session you will be introduced to library resources, discuss how to come up with a research topic and make a plan to start searching for sources.

EmPOWER Center Services 

The EmPOWER Center offers the following services: 

  1. Phone/video sessions with our Project Sister counselors located at EmPOWER: To schedule, please call (909) 607-0690.
    (Ongoing sessions are available to students currently receiving our counseling services OR to students living within CA. Students living outside of CA receive intial emotional support and referrals in their local communities,in keeping with CA mental health licensing laws.)

  • Drop-In Coffee Hour with MCAPS for Grad Students: BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee)
    First Monday of every month 11-11:50 AM (2/1, 3/1, 4/5, & 5/3). Drop in with Drs. Dana Reyes and Beth Perlman to chat about the unique experience of graduate school, get support from peers, and identify strategies for managing stress.   • Anxiety Management on Tuesdays 11-11:50 AM (2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, & 3/2). This is a 5-week workshop series in which students will explore ways of coping with anxiety by living in full experience rather than running from the stressors of life.   • Managing Stress Wednesdays 12-12:50 PM (weekly). This drop-in hour is for those who need to quarantine due to virus exposure, those worried about the health of self/others, and those who are feeling stress due to the pandemic in other ways. During the hour, students will be provided with tools to manage stress. Come together to find strength through solidarity and connection. To register contact: LisetteSa@claremont.edu.
  • Yoga Postures for Stress Relief Wednesdays 3-3:50 PM (3/17 & 5/5). Join Drs. Dana Reyes and Beth Perlman for a workshop which explores postures, breathing, and stretches that help reduce stress.   • Creative Expressions Thursdays 1- 2 PM (2/4, 2/18, 3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15, & 4/29). This biweekly drop in workshop will focus on developing healthy coping through artistic expression.
