Celebrate These Milestones!Happy 3rd Anniversary The FriendShip officially began providing services on October 1, 2015. Time flies when you're having fun, and here we are celebrating The FriendShip’s third anniversary! Along the way, we’ve provided hundreds of services, offered dozens and dozens of special programs and outings and made a meaningful difference in the lives of our members! Thank you to all of our volunteers, donors, and other supporters who give in so many ways to improve the lives of older adults in our community! 2017-18 Annual Report Available The FriendShip’s fiscal year 2017-2018 Annual Report is now available. Please take a moment to check it out. The report highlights a wonderful milestone from this past year: our volunteers provided over 400 services for members, which is double the number from the year before. For an electronic copy of the report, click here. Please contact the office if you would like a hard copy mailed to you. Special Fund Honoring Two Special Volunteers Foremost among our incredible network of volunteers are Jane Blair, the immediate past president of The FriendShip, and Patricia Rock, former Board member and chair of the Volunteer Committee. They have been dedicated to serving The FriendShip from its very earliest days. To honor their many, many contributions, the Board of Directors set up a scholarship fund over the summer in their honor, as was announced at the Annual Meeting. Donations to support this scholarship fund are welcome! (What better way to celebrate The FriendShip’s third anniversary?!) You can give online or send your donation to The FriendShip office. Contact the president of the Board, Paul McCullough, for more information. He can be reached via the main email address at contact@thefriendship.org. Help Wanted! The FriendShip is interested in having your suggestions for our Preferred Provider list. This list, which members have access to as a part of their member benefits, includes businesses that can be hired for more complex home maintenance needs. If you have hired a provider that you would like to recommend to the Preferred Provider Committee for consideration, please email contact@thefriendship.org. Please note that providers are asked to complete an application process and must be licensed, insured, and bonded; all applications must be approved by the Board. The FriendShip office could use an additional bookshelf to increase our storage space. If you have one that you are not using anymore and are interested in donating it, please call the office or email contact@thefriendship.org. Out & About with Members & VolunteersOne of our members contacted the office and expressed interest in attending the South Carolina State Fair this year. The fair will run from October 10-21. Please let Eleanor know if you are interested in going so perhaps we can coordinate a group of members and volunteers to check out the attractions, events, and competitions together. Call the office at 803-602-6434 or email contact@thefriendship.org. Another of our members/volunteers participates in a peace vigil outside the S.C. State House each Wednesday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. If you are interested in learning more about or participating in this effort, please contact Eleanor to put you in touch with the member/volunteer who can share more information. Several of our members have expressed interest in going to the movies together. If you see a movie that strikes your fancy, consider taking The FriendShip along! The office can provide support with the logistics. Please contact Eleanor if you are interested in helping coordinate! Special October Program: A Case of High Profile PublicityJoin The FriendShip on Thursday, October 18 for a unique opportunity to learn about a high profile 20th century court case—and you’ll see that many of the issues raised have incredible relevance in today’s times as well. Drawing on slides and an engaging presentation style, our guest speaker James M. Dedman III will share his extensive knowledge about a fascinating trial from the early 20th century: “People v. Nan Patterson.” Ms. Patterson was a chorus girl and actress in New York who was accused in 1904 of the murder of Frank "Caesar" Young, a nationally prominent race horse owner and gambler. She was kept in jail while she was tried three times for the death penalty, and the trial was nationally publicized. Mr. Dedman, who taught theory-based trial advocacy for the National College of District Attorneys for 28 years at the University of Houston Law Center and the University of South Carolina National Advocacy Center, published an article on this case in the November 2017 issue of “The Prosecutor.” The agenda for the afternoon will be as follows:
RSVPs would be appreciated by Monday, October 15 at noon. Please mark your calendars for this thought-provoking program! October Social HourEach month, The FriendShip hosts an afternoon social hour as a chance for members and volunteers to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company. In September, we had a fun get-together working jigsaw puzzles! The October social hour will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m. Save the date and keep an eye out for more details to follow. Free Recycling Event (Volunteers Needed!)There will be a free recycling event for Richland and Lexington County residents on Saturday, October 20 at Irmo High School from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Items accepted will include paper for shredding, household hazardous waste, electronics and more. If you have items that you need to recycle, contact The FriendShip office, and we will work to coordinate volunteers to pick up your recycling and deliver it to the event for you. Note: If you are willing to serve as a volunteer for this effort on behalf of members of The FriendShip, contact Eleanor by calling 803-602-6434 or email contact@thefriendship.org. |
