Jackrabbit Media's market booth, Cannes 2026

With another Cannes market in the books, buyers return home with a renewed outlook on the state of the industry. Read below for some key takeaways.

Screen Daily reported the verdict from buyers and sellers from this year's market. A fairly positive review with buyers from the U.S saying:

"The general view was that the range and quality of market packages marked an improvement over 2025’s bloated fare."

The Hollywood Reporter gave the lowdown on the market and it's genre-focused title shift. Given that audiences are getting younger and are hungry for more auteur-driven films they state that:

"Major Hollywood studios that years ago shuttered their specialty divisions are tapping indie acquisition and producing talent in an apparent attempt to compete with the likes of IFC/Shudder, Neon and A24."

President of Worldwide Sales & Acquisitions, Mark Padilla had this to say about how the recent market influences Jackrabbit Media's slate and upcoming projects:

"Jackrabbit Media has always tried to curate its slate to meet market needs. As audiences have embraced the "elevated genre" movie, we have leaned into that space as well. Last year we shot a sci-fi thriller, LOOKOUT, that centered on a young woman being pursued by an alien in a national forest. Just recently we wrapped production on a daytime horror movie, BLOOM, that centers on a young woman who discovers that fresh blood must be added to the soil to make her beautiful flowers grow.

It's no secret that audiences are looking for original stories and seem to enjoy them more when those stories fall into the horror/thriller space. It's our job to find and create the right films that will entice them to keep watching."

Today's talk:

The Power of Youtube

Independent artists have developed a reputation of creating their films with shoestring budgets and shooting on tight deadlines. Over the years they've self-funded, worked long hours and had more fun than anyone else doing the thing they love. In today's day in age there are so many opportunities for filmmakers to be discovered but perhaps the biggest flagship, Youtube, still remains.

Youtube has always been a place to hone your skills, create a project and find an audience. It's a platform that allows you to find you people and create a community surrounding a project sometimes long before it's discovered. Take for example, two of the most recently released horror hits, Obsession and Backrooms. Both born from the minds of Youtube creators and now being shown across screens worldwide where long-time fans sit alongside first timers experiencing these director's work as a collective.

Still widely considered non-traditional however, it's hard for Hollywood to deny that the moment of independent filmmakers born from the backs of their grassroots productions is here. For genre films in the indie space it's a huge moment of recognition that will hopefully lead to larger scale acknowledgements in the years to come.
