Highlighted Veterinary Podcasts With the upcoming holiday break, maximize your free time by throwing on a podcast in the background when driving to visit family, decorating for the holidays, or lounging outside in Florida's not-so-cold winter weather. If you're feeling like trying out a new veterinary podcast or two, we've got you covered. We listened to a bunch of the veterinary podcasts out there to highlight a few that may be of interest to you! Blunt Dissection Podcast by Dr. Dave Nicol
2019 VMX Speaker of the Year, Dr. Dave Nicol, aims to interview and profile "the best minds in veterinary medicine, academia, & business" from around the world. Some of the bright minds interviewed include large animal veterinarians Dr. Cody Creelman and Dr. Robert M Miller, Lap of Love executives Dr. Dany McVety and Dr. Sheilah Robertson, and even fourth year students at the Royal Veterinary College.
Why we love it: Presented with a phenomenal British accent and a bit of humor, this podcast certainly entertains while also educating on interesting topics. This is a great listen for those who want to hear about more than just medicine and hear about the personal experiences of famous veterinarians.
The Uncharted Veterinary Podcast by Dr. Andy Roark
Hosted by Dr. Andy Roark (of social media fame & the UF CVM class of 2008), this podcast brings Dr. Roark's Uncharted Veterinary Community into podcast form. The podcast – and the community on which it is based – is focused on business and career development, including improving communication, dealing with tough owners and coworkers, and how to effectively manage our precious time.
Why we love it: This podcast dives into some of the trickier issues we face daily in the workplace that we may be afraid to talk about, such as handling client threats, being overwhelmed, and facing demanding managers. Dr. Roark also brings humor & a real-talk approach into these difficult situations to make listening enjoyable!
Make sure to listen to Episode 17: First Job Survival Guide for Veterinarians
VETgirl Veterinary Continuing Education Podcast by Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT & Dr. Garret Pacinger, DACVECC
This short & sweet podcast (episodes range from 3 to 33 minutes!) gives a general overview of common diseases, diagnoses, and treatments in small animal medicine. This podcast is perfect for those who want a refresher on current procedures and frequently seen diseases and is easy to listen to on the walk from your car in the animal science lot or your daily commute.
Why we love it: This podcast is shorter than most, making it easy to breeze through the episodes! Also, the guest speakers are a great addition to help bring expert opinions into the episodes.
My Veterinary Life by Dr. Marci Kirk & Dr. Anna Reddish
Featuring a wide variety of guests who have specific interests in veterinary medicine, this podcast, sponsored by the AVMA, allows veterinarians to share stories from their careers. From challenges they've faced to how they've overcome them, this podcast aims to show just how cool our profession can be.
Why we love it: This podcast goes beyond veterinary medicine and talks about what makes veterinarians great both inside and outside of the workplace, such as motherhood, fatherhood, and even synchronized swimming.
Bonus: PreVet Pawscast by our very own Alex Avelino
The UF CVM-sponsored podcast talks about what pre-vet students need to know before applying to vet school, from interviews with specialists to discussing how to pilot through the years of undergrad with vet school as the final destination. This is a perfect podcast to recommend to all of our pre-vet friends who are excited to someday join us on our DVM journey!
Why we love it: This podcast is light and educational, and the only thing that would make it better is if someone thought of it when we were baby pre-vets hoping the admissions committee would take a chance on us!
