Discharged at his mother’s request, he volunteered again in 1916, serving with the 8th Field Ambulance, 30th Battalion and the Dental Corps in France. When he returned to Australia in early 1920, his parents decorated their home with patriotic bunting and hired two cars for the entire family to welcome him home. Here he is with his parents and nine siblings, although he seems a little overwhelmed by the fuss. The house in Leicester Avenue still stands. Courtesy Australian War Memorial |
