Throwback Thursday

Staff Sergeant Arthur Sydney Hyde (SERN: 15543)

Dental mechanic, Arthur Hyde of 9 Leicester Avenue, Strathfield enlisted without his parents’ consent in 1915, aged just 18. Discharged at his mother’s request, he volunteered again in 1916, serving with the 8th Field Ambulance, 30th Battalion and the Dental Corps in France. When he returned to Australia in early 1920, his parents decorated their home with patriotic bunting and hired two cars for the entire family to welcome him home. Here he is with his parents and nine siblings, although he seems a little overwhelmed by the fuss. The house in Leicester Avenue still stands.
