Greetings from the Dean's Office!August was a busy month as we celebrated the classes of 2020 and 2021 with two consecutive commencement ceremonies, and a mere three weeks later welcomed the class of 2025 to the Wilkinson family! The Italian Studies program is thriving, thanks to a generous gift from Chapman President Daniele Struppa, which you can learn about below. Finally, the Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Environmental Justice program begins in earnest this month. Of special note: a virtual lecture by Dr. Robert Bullard, widely considered the founder of the environmental justice movement, on September 21 at noon. Bernardino Telesio Endowed Professorship in Italian StudiesChapman President Daniele C. Struppa has designated a $1 million legacy gift for the Italian Studies program of Wilkinson College. The program will be the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that, upon his passing, will endow the Bernardino Telesio Professorship in Italian Studies. Mapping Environmental Injustice: Wilkinson Student Takes First Place Graduate Mallory Warhurst (’21, Environmental Science & Policy, Political Science) was awarded first place in the Environmental Systems Research Institute Spatial Thinking Student Competition in the communication category with her story map, A Hostile Long Beach. Inspired by Dr. Georgiana Bostean's (Sociology, Environmental Science & Policy) course in Geographic Information Systems, Warhurst considers how design choices impact populations in uneven ways and traces the historical reasons why we see the patterns of social inequality that exist today. Personalized Education in Action: SURF Summer ResearchThe Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program offers Chapman University undergraduate students experience in hands-on research and creative scholarship mentored by expert faculty. Bullard, often described as "the father of Environmental Justice."
