31st January 2020A Message from the Head...This week got off to a very busy start with our annual Entrance & Scholarship Assessment Day for September 2020 candidates wishing to join Gateways into Upper 3. The video below contains a few photos from the day itself during which all candidates played just as hard as they worked! My sincere thanks to all staff who helped this day to run so smoothly and of course thanks to all of the candidates who put their best foot forward and really did impress us with their performances. Maths Memo from Mrs PeaseMrs Pease may have only just joined Gateways School at the beginning of January, but she has certainly made her presence felt quickly! Her new High School Calligraphy Club starts next Thursday and the first edition of her monthly Maths Memo has been published today. You can read all about what U3 have been getting up to in their maths lessons by clicking on the picture above. Her Monthly Maths Memo also contains lots of useful advice and links to improve your maths skills! The 6th Form information evening for the current U5 takes place on 11th February and replies via Firefly are due in by Monday. Thanks and have a great weekend! - Dr Tracy Johnson - Children's Mental Health WeekA reminder that next week is Children's Mental Health Week. Mental Health charity Place2Be launched the first ever Children's Mental Health Week in 2015 to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. This year’s theme is 'Find your Brave' - look out for a new blog on our website on this topic next week. We are also supporting 'Inside Out Day' on Thursday 6th February and would like all pupils to wear one item of their uniform inside out. The focus of the day is to: · Recognise that mental health is becoming a bigger issue amongst school age children; · Encourage children to realise that social media and appearances don’t always reflect how someone is feeling on the inside; · Encourage children to seek help if they are struggling · Reflect and value the importance of being kind, both to yourself & others We are suggesting a voluntary donation of £1 per pupil to the charity ifyoucareshare.co.uk for taking part. More information on Children's Mental Health can be found here An Inspiring Story Former Gateways pupil Henrietta Hill QC, based at Doughty Street Chambers in London, recently got in touch to provide us with a free copy of a new children's book 'Equal to Everything, Judge Brenda and the Supreme Court'. The book is is based on the life of Yorkshire-born Lady Hale, former President of the Supreme Court who is an icon in the legal world. The book teaches children the basic fundamentals of law and teaches how important the law is to help people, particularly in relation to equality. It is also intended to inspire children and demonstrate how anyone can reach the top of the profession they choose. Thanks to Henrietta for giving us a copy of this book which we will make available in our Prep School library.
