Links - Term 1, Week 6 2020 A Message From Senior Boarder, Cassidy EmmottNew Boarders Settling InNow that 2020 is well underway, it has been so special for me to see all the new boarders settling in and finding their feet. We are only six weeks into Term 1 and I have already witnessed the new boarding girls becoming more independent, confident and happy; fully embracing boarding life! A Rewarding JourneyI began boarding at PLC in Year 10, and understand how difficult it can be, especially in the beginning! The boarding journey is one of the hardest ventures to start, but definitely the most rewarding to finish. We are extremely lucky to have a unified Boarding House, where we are encouraged to develop as independent women and leaders. A Busy Start to the YearThe start of the year is always extremely busy, as we organise our annual Boarders’ Closed Weekend that helps us grow closer and bond through the 2020 Amazing Race (boarding style) and other fun activities. Our Buddy Programme is another step we take to ensure that all of our girls feel at home in a happy, healthy and safe place. Farm2Fork Next SaturdayWe are all excited about Farm2Fork next Saturday night! Boarding parent and Farm2Fork Co-ordinator, Michelle Barrett has put in an admirable amount of effort and time into making this event happen. Thank you to all the boarding families who are taking part in the food preparation for the big night. Come along and support WA produce. A Big Thanks to Mr HickmottAs boarders, we sometimes get distracted with life being one big sleepover, but on the study and school side of things, we have been so lucky to have Mr Hickmott as our Boarding House Learning Co-ordinator. Mr Hickmott has dedicated so much of his time constructing a tutoring programme where our teachers join us in the Boarding House on a regular basis to help us with homework. Along with this, the older girls in the Boarding House take part in 'help a sister out', a programme where we help out the little ones if they need a hand with any of their subjects! A big thankyou to Mr Hickmott for all his support and dedication to the Boarding House and all us girls! - Cassidy Emmott, Senior Boarder International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Monday 9 March Make A Difference Week Movie Bushfire FundraiserDate: Wednesday 11 March Farm2Fork | A Community Food EventDate: Saturday 14 March Night at the MusicalsDate: Thursday 26 March - Saturday 28 March End of Term (Junior and Senior School)Date: Thursday 9 April Make a Difference WeekNext week is Make a Difference Week, and focusing on our 2020 theme of 'environment', the girls will be looking at ways PLC can be more waste-wise. For more information, please contact Linda Malone - linda.malone@plc.wa.edu.au. - Linda Malone, Head of Service and Community Partnerships Inter-House Swimming CarnivalThe Swimming Carnival was a wonderful opportunity for our students to demonstrate resilience and grit. The students performed admirably on the day, swimming through what became a rainy, cool and blustery morning. My sincere congratulations to all students who took part and therefore earned points for their House. A reminder that the House Cup was won by only 10 points. Every participation / every point counts! Due to the weather conditions at the Swimming Carnival, we will hold the War Cries and presentations during tomorrow's Assembly. My apologies to those members of the community inconvenienced by this change. Finally, my congratulations to our swimming champions and record breaker. It was wonderful to see you display your talents on the day. World’s Greatest ShaveWe invite Junior School students and staff to braid their hair to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation. Ongoing participation in this event was inspired by one of our former students, Kate Sinclair (2016) who faced her own Leukemia challenge in Year 12. The event is being held on Monday 30 March from 1.00 pm – 1.30 pm in the SRC. Permission forms can be found here. - Richard Wright, Head of Junior School Junior School Upcoming DatesJunior School Assembly (hosted by Year 6)Date: Tomorrow - Friday 6 March International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Monday 9 March Year 6 Parent ForumDate: Tuesday 17 March JIGSSA Swimming Carnivals – Years 4 to 6Date: Thursday 19 March Junior School Assembly (hosted by Year 4)Date: Friday 20 March We Can All Make a DifferenceMake A Difference Week is fast approaching and there are lots of ways our Senior School girls can get involved! Through the week's activities, students will be able to explore the way that they can make a difference on a local and global scale. With this in mind, I encourage our students to think about how they can make a difference on a large, or small scale. This could be as simple as engaging in an act of kindness towards their fellow peers, or showing their gratitude to our hard-working teachers and staff. Every little bit of kindness strengthens our wonderful community. This week, our Year 10s have explored the impact of kindness and have been encouraged to consider a new perspective, focus on their goals and not to let challenges get in their way. What great advice for us all to live by and a timely reminder to the strong young women in our community with International Women’s Day on Monday. - Head of Senior School, Rebecca Watts Senior School Upcoming DatesYear 11 Dinner DanceDate: Tomorrow - Friday 6 March Proms Quarry ConcertDate: Sunday 8 March Year 8.1 Outdoor Education ProgrammeDates: Monday 9 March - Friday 13 March International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Monday 9 March Years 7 - 12 IGSSA Swim Carnival (selected students only)Date: Friday 13 March Year 8.2 Outdoor Education ProgrammeDates: Monday 16 March - Friday 20 March Rowing NationalsDates: Saturday 21 March - Friday 27 March Night at the MusicalsDate: Thursday 26 March - Saturday 28 March Calling All PoetsEntries are now open for the 2020 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.
