NOTICES:
Safety of our Students: It is important for the safety of our students and local residents that all parents who drive to school in the mornings and afternoons are adhering to the road rules. We ask you all to consider the following: Do not speed on our surrounding roads as many families walk to and from
school and this compromises their safety.
Do not park on the zig zag lines at the front of the school as this impacts on our students safely crossing the road.
Do not park across the driveways of our neighbours, as this will disrupt access to their private property. As a school we suggest walking or catching public transport to school to where possible. If you have to drive, there is often ample parking spaces a little further away from the school, which may also alleviate the congestion and stress of the morning. We thank you for your cooperation on this matter and your consideration of our local community.
Equipment - Parents please ensure your child comes into school with all the equipment and food they will need for the day. The front office will not be responsible for taking things to classroom as this is disruptive to children's learning.Reminder to Parents No bicycles or scooters
are to be ridden in the school gates, this includes when coming to collect from after school clubs. No climbing is permitted on the bicycle racks.
Happy Friday to our Middle School Community! Another week comes to an end and our school is starting to settle well into our daily rhythms. We have had a great week in the crisp but sunny weather, slowly introducing all the new equipment into our playground. Last year, a Pupil Voice survey offered us many valuable suggestions on how we can work
on improving lunch and break times which we are acting upon. These improvements include providing more space, better equipment, more adults to support our students, a pasta bar option in the canteen and Playground Mentors who are currently training as part of a project with Ms Druce in Year 8.
If any parents have connections with gardening groups who may like to donate some seeds or plants for our allotment, businesses who can supply is with timber off-cuts for creative play (eg. planks and blocks), or any companies who might be willing to donate any other play equipment, please get in touch via email to akyrk@school21.org.uk We have also started the process of handing over the reigns of the newsletter to our Middle School students, who
will now be working with the Editor-in-Chief, Ms McLear on writing the bulk of the stories included in the newsletter. Students who are interested in becoming contributing authors should see Ms McLear in C14 to get involved. Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you Monday for another great week!Miss
Kyrk
Recognition in Middle SchoolEveryday we celebrate people in our community who go ‘above and beyond’ to make our school a safe and happy place for everyone. In the middle of our courtyard is a huge screen where names are animated as they are added by the staff (and the students who ask to add recognition!). We had a
phenomenal week with 488 recognitions being recorded. Let’s hope that next week we break the 500 mark!
Project Power in Year 8!Projects at School 21 are one of the best ways students can express their creativity, opinions and skills. Some of the latest Year 8 projects have completely wowed the pupils; not only is it the fact that children can now choose their projects but also the activities and subjects covered in them.
This term the choices were very interesting ranging from the Mile a Minute PE project all the way through to the Historical Fiction English project. As well as this, there are two projects you can work on both Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students in the marketing project are developing company brands and creating new food confections to sell. These projects give students a such called ‘work experience’ as this project involves marketing, however others may include writing books like an author or designing like an artist. Being in the Market Stall project myself I quite enjoy the experience, many of these projects are fun and interactive, such as the Blackfish project, protesting for animals rights, which was a popular choice as it is a wonderful way for pupils to share their opinions through
school. Projects may also engage students in extracurricular work such as running which may become a healthy lifestyle habit as training is necessary to run a mile. However that isn't all, every project includes a visit or a trip giving each pupil a fair chance of choice and doesn't disencourage from other options. Overall, projects are an excellent way to convey knowledge and experience in an innovative way.
A Great Time at Plexal! On Saturday 22nd September we went on the journey of a lifetime to Plexal City (not really a city!) in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to take part in the EdTech Podcast Festival. Events started at 10 am and we knew we were going to have an amazing time. But don’t think we went to Plexal just for fun. We went there to highlight the importance of oracy by performing speeches. Before the performances began we had a quick refreshment break and rehearsed ready for our 11 am time slot. As we got ready Ms Kyrk took to the stand to talk about how we use oracy at School 21 and about 15 minutes later we proudly performed our speeches!Luckily the audience loved our speeches and from then on we had lots of fun including: Lego workshops; Now Press Play experience; table tennis and - best of all- canoeing in the canal! After our awesome day came to an end we were interviewed by some news correspondents. It was one of the best days of our lives. It was inspiring, educational and most important…really fun!
Bounce into Zap Space!
School 21 students have been made an incredible offer from ZapSpace! Bring your child along to any freestyle bounce sessions during the school term for just £5.00. Please collect a registration form and return to ZAPspace, you will be sent a membership card for you to have access to this deal. For those of you who haven't been along, it's 50 yards from Discover Centre on Stratford High Street, behind the school on the corner opposite Stratford High Street rail. A big thank you to Dan,
the General Manager of ZapSpace (and dad of one of our lovely students!) and Lubna, for helping to coordinate the offer.
Meet the TeamThank you to all the families who came to interpret ruins, build an actual language tree, decipher mixed up words and say things in Spanish (along with about 20 other challenge tasks!) at our Meet the Team event this week. The partnership between home and school is one we are eager
to grow, especially in line with our value of Community. With this in mind we would be appreciative if you could take a few minutes to give us some feedback by clicking here and answering the few questions provided
Thank you for your continued support!
MacMillan Coffee Morning We are participating in 'The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning' on Monday 1st October to help raise funds for people facing cancer. Last year alone we contributed to raising over £27 million and together we can make this another successful year. We will be
hosting our coffee morning from 8am to 9am in the Primary hall, and we would love to see everyone drop in for a coffee, a tea, a piece of cake or a chat to help support this worthy cause! If you can donate any baked goods (which are nut free!) for the event please can you contact either Mrs Drummond or Miss Kyrk.
Free online safety workshop for parents and carersMuddled by Minecraft or rattled by Roblox? NSPCC and O2 are running an hour-long interactive workshop with tips, tools and advice on how to keep your child safe online. Talking about online safety with your child doesn’t need
to be difficult to build your confidence to have those important conversations, get to know your child’s online world and learn where to go for help and advice. The workshop will take place at School 21 on Tuesday 6th November 2018. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity! Make sure you RSVP by emailing mdrummond@school21.org.uk
