Record Funding Package for NSW Surf Life Saving ClubsSurf Life Saving NSW President George Shales OAM and CEO Steven Pearce have announced a record funding package for all surf clubs in NSW to help them recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding package is one of the biggest single injections of funding to clubs ever made by Surf Life Saving NSW and is designed to support clubs as they open their doors and re-engage with their members in the lead-up to the new summer patrol season. Rock Fisher Rescue Wins Rescue of the Month AwardThe life saving rescue of a 32-year-old rock fisher, who was swept into the water without a life jacket, has been awarded the Surf Life Saving NSW Rescue of the Month for March 2020.
Women Celebrate 40 Years as Surf LifesaversWednesday 1 July 2020 marks 40 years since women were given the opportunity by Surf Life Saving Australia to achieve their Bronze Medallions, don the iconic red and yellow patrol uniform and actively patrol Australian beaches as surf lifesavers. Far South Coast Bushfire StoriesFor the entire month of January, the Far South Coast was in a constant state of uncertainty and fear of the threat of fires. On New Year's Eve, the sun didn't rise and thousands retreated to our surf clubs where lifesavers stood up with skills, compassion and support for their communities. No one asked them to do it but they were there, and our iconic red and yellow uniforms became a lifesaving beacon through the dark, thick smoke. What our lifesavers did is remarkable and as a result, the community now has a much deeper understanding of our capabilities on and off the beach. Lifesavers Use AI Technology to Spot SharksA world-first scientific trial using artificial intelligence (AI) to help drone pilots identify shark species in real time has been completed at five beaches in northern NSW.
Gina Crick - The Woman Who Dared to DreamIn 1973 Gina Crick joined Woonona Surf Life Saving Club and became a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Back then her role was serving ice creams at the clubhouse tuck shop. Under the existing Surf Life Saving regulations at the time, that was the limit of women’s official involvement. First Female Surf LifesaverForty years ago, Port Kembla’s Nella Keenan (nee Risi) and seven other young women became the first females in Australia to obtain their Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallions. It didn’t seem like a big deal to Nella back then, but for thousands of women today who benefited from the inroads they made, it was a significant achievement. It was pre-season and she was told that for the first time ever, a squad of women were about to start training at Austinmer Beach.
