the PRES June 2018 Sailboat Churches We have just celebrated Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Acts describes the Spirit coming with the “sound like the rush of a violent wind” (2:2). The word for spirit (in both Greek and Hebrew) can also mean wind. It is fitting. Like the wind, we cannot see the Spirit, but we feel it and we see the effects of the Spirit moving. At the recent officers’ retreat, we considered the idea of a “sailboat church” (based on Joan S. Gray’s book Sailboat Church: Helping Your Church Rethink Its Mission and Practice). Gray says there are two kinds of churches: “rowboat churches” and “sailboat churches.” Rowboat churches operate under the basic assumption that God has given us work to do and it’s up to us to do that work. Rowboat churches are powered by people who work hard at rowing the boat’s oars as if the church’s success depends on their effort. Sailboat churches focus on catching the wind of God’s Spirit. They prayerfully discern where God’s Spirit is moving and let the movement of the Spirit power their movement. When have you experienced “sailing” with God’s Spirit in your own life or in the life of this congregation? Reverend Kari A. Olson Sing It! Many thanks to the choir for their dedication and beautiful singing this church season. The choir sends best wishes to our High School bass, Michael Davis, for giving of his time and talent. Michael has sung with us for at least 2 years and has been an important part of our group. As he prepares to attend college, the choir wishes him the very best and much success. Thank you Michael! Summer come and sing sessions If you have thought about singing in the choir, but too shy or just uncertain, come and participate in the Summer Come and Sing Sessions. I will be available to anyone who thinks that they would like to get a taste of choir without stress. Session will run about 15 minutes, but can be modified to suit anyone interested. I will make myself available to meet with you during the summer after church or a time that works for you. Anyone interested can just come sing, try out a part, or just learn one of your favorite anthems that you might like to sing with the choir during the church season. If interested, contact me at 215-247-4168.
