Sydney Edwards - Director, Marketing and Acquisitions at Jackrabbit Media
Photo by Justin R. Sydney has been with Jackrabbit for two years and is the head of PR and Marketing, assisting in the promotion of independent feature films. She attended Arizona State University and has a BFA in Film and Media Production and is a writer, director, and self appointed "part-time" poet. Her Letterboxd top four films are The Breakfast Club, 10 Things I Hate About You, Ready or Not, and Scream. JRM: How did you end up in film marketing/PR? Sydney: It was by happenstance really. The team and I realized that we needed someone with dedicated time to really work the marketing and PR angles for our films. I've spent a lot of time building new connections with folks, especially across social media and that's turned into a huge tool when it comes to promoting our films. JRM: How do you handle differing opinions between filmmakers, sales, and marketing? Sydney: I like the challenge of trying to bring everyone's opinions together into a campaign that will work for each specific film. A big part of what appeals to me about film in general is the collaboration between different people. Everyone has a different approach and what I know about one thing, someone else may know another, so really it's a lot of fun to mesh those ideas together. JRM: What’s your take on social media right now: love it, tolerate it, or creatively exhausted by it? Sydney: I think there's a fine line when it comes to social media. Personally, I tolerate it but it's truly everywhere these days which makes it hard to disconnect. On the business side of things however, I think it's a great tool to utilize for promos and reach outs. There are a lot of films out there that people would have never discovered if not for social media. Whether that was built into their marketing or something brought about by cinephiles who just love to talk movies, indies especially benefit from it. JRM: How do you decide which audiences to prioritize when a film could appeal to many? Sydney: This sort of ties into the previous question for me. There are so many people a film can have an impact on and it's definitely one of the challenges the team and I always discuss before promoting. Who do we want this to reach and how do we get it to them? Nine times out of ten, if we hit our target audience, there's a trickle down effect that happens where the film naturally grows its audience based off initial outreach. It's really neat to see it happen and always make me excited to see other's discovering our films for the first time. JRM: What excites you about where independent film is headed right now? Sydney: I've always loved that independent film has been a space for people to explore and try new things that go against the grain of what studio films are doing. Doesn't matter if it works, all that matters is that you're out there doing it. To me there's a certain heart to independents and so many fresh, new voices out there right now, so it's exciting to see what they're bringing to the table! JRM: What’s a movie you wish you could watch again for the first time? Sydney: The Breakfast Club. Maybe it's not the most profoundly moving film but it's one that's moved me over time. I discover something different every watch and the final words stick with me long after the credits roll. It's for sure a comfort watch and I've always admired the way John Hughes wrote his characters with such distinction and humanity.
