Makerspace Stimulates Creativity, Teamwork, Life Experiences Recently, second graders were given the challenge to use the engineering design process that they are learning about in the classroom to create a shoe out of newspaper that could be placed or removed from a team member’s foot. Fifth graders were tasked with building a flood barrier to protect a theoretical dog house in their backyard. Prior to designing and building their barrier, they tested out the absorbency of different materials in order to choose the best ones to protect their dog house from flooding. When designing and constructing their barrier, students had to stay within a given budget for materials. The kids
were able to connect their learning to the recent flash flooding and storm surging caused by tropical storms and hurricanes in our region.
Join the

Welcome to Alumni Spotlight! In each newsletter we will be celebrating the accomplishments and news of our beloved OLV Alumni. When we receive updates from our distinguished alumni, we are reminded of the difference that a quality Catholic education can make in the formation of a young adult.
If you have any alumni news to share, please send it to alumninews@olvsch.com. Also, we are working on building an OLV alumni database this year and look forward to your assistance with this as well. If you are an alumnus of OLV, please take a minute to complete the form below. Please help us to reach all of our alumni by forwarding this form to any OLV graduates that you know. Thank you!
Tanner Gray (OLV '17) recently completed his Eagle Scout Project at Oak Mountain Elementary. Tanner raised the funding and spent countless hours clearing out overgrown shrubbery from the kindergarten courtyard. After removing the shrubs, he built enclosures to hide air conditioner units and built new picnic tables. He recently presented Principal Debbie Horton with a check for the remainder of the money he raised for the project which was not used.
Madeline Chandler (OLV '09, JCCHS '13) has recently been cast in a nationally touring show of How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Musical. The show will be in many cities of the country including Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. Madeline discovered her love for the performing arts with her involvement in the drama program at OLV, and continued to hone her talents as a thespian at John Carroll Catholic High School. Madeline was one of the charter members of OLV's Thespian Troupe and received many honors for her performances in competitions throughout her years at OLV and JCCHS. If you would like to know more about the show and see the schedule for the tour, click HERE.
Kelsi Hobbs (OLV '12, JCCHS '16) is currently a junior at Samford University and a member of their volleyball team. During the first month of the 2018 NCAA volleyball season, Kelsi, Samford’s Opposite Hitter, has registered 187 kills and 22 aces. These statistics currently place her at #38 and #22 in the nation among all Division 1 volleyball players in these two categories. Kelsi began playing volleyball at OLV in the Toy Bowl league and quickly advanced to the John Carroll middle-school team where she continued to hone her skills and excel in the sport. The Samford Bulldogs play their home volleyball matches at the Pete Hanna Center on the Samford campus. Admission is free. Click HERE for Samford's Volleyball schedule.

Correction: In the last newsletter, we celebrated many of our 7th graders for the accomplishment of qualifying for the Duke Talent Identification Program. We inadvertently omitted Elizabeth Bandura, one of our new students, from that list qualifiers. Congratulations Elizabeth! We are so glad to have you as part of our family!
