No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC Last week PLC celebrated its 102nd birthday at our Founders’ Day assembly and we also welcomed back the classes of 1947 and 1957 for their reunions. It was particularly special to spend time with our Old Collegians as they reflected on their time at PLC and the positive impact it has had on their lives. Each year, our PLC Foundation generously awards one very lucky Year 7 student a full scholarship to attend our School. These scholarships are given to students who would otherwise not have the means to attend PLC. As part of our promotional work with the Foundation this year, we interviewed our Foundation scholars and asked them what the scholarship meant to them. It was an emotional experience as the girls expressed, some in words and some in words with tears, how truly blessed they feel to attend PLC and how grateful they are to have been given this gift that they already know will last a lifetime. Interestingly, PLC’s Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) score (the scale developed by the government to compare schools with a similar demographic of students with regards to levels of advantage), places PLC below all our competitor schools, including Iona Presentation College. Clearly there are many within our community who are sacrificing significantly in order to provide the gift of an outstanding education for their children. We are grateful that families continue to see value in a PLC education and, while many are stretched to find the fees, there are others who have the capacity and do give to our Foundation to enable other students to have this opportunity. This year our PLC Foundation asked me to identify five students for whom a PLC education would make a defining difference in their lives, and who could not otherwise afford to attend the School. Should you be interested in part-funding one of these students, please phone and make a time to meet with me or alternatively, our Foundation board members would be happy to discuss with you how you could give the gift that lasts a lifetime to a very deserving future PLC girl. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Sunday 27 AugustPerth City to Surf, Dads@PLC are leading Team PLC in the City to Surf. "So often we refuse to let others be different, be surprising, be themselves. This refusal to let be comes from an inner refusal to let oneself be, to be with oneself - the essential spiritual gift learnt from solitude." - Matthew Fox, creation theologian. Being truly human means learning to accept others. Sometimes we may be a bit jealous of those who are brave enough to be different, to be surprising, to be themselves. Learning to celebrate this in others can give us the freedom to appreciate and celebrate ourselves. - Rev. Gary van Heerden Junior School Arts WeekJunior School Arts Week opened with a joyful Book Day costume parade in the Swim and Recreation Centre on Tuesday morning. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents joining in the fun and watching the students (and staff) parading in their fabulous costumes. Many depicted a character from their favourite book, while others incorporated the Children’s Book Council of Australia theme, “Escape to Everywhere”. The students took much delight in wearing their costumes for the day and the Junior School was a rainbow of colour! View the gallery. On Wednesday morning, we were delighted to welcome grandparents and special friends to the Junior School to participate in a variety of wellbeing, construction and art activities with the children. It was lovely to have so many guests joining us. View the gallery. Thank you to the many parents who catered and managed the morning tea, as well as our fabulous chorale students who performed. Our guests were also thrilled to see many students and staff wearing crazy socks, drawing attention to our sock fundraising efforts for UnitingCare West. We are all looking forward to the Junior School Arts Day tomorrow! - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School Music Students - Open Lesson WeekDuring Week 7 (Monday 4 September - Friday 8 September), parents are invited to attend their daughter's scheduled instrumental or vocal music lesson to observe and discuss their child's progress and development. Da Vinci DecathlonEach year, the da Vinci Decathlon competition gets bigger and this year saw 19 teams of eight compete in a variety of high-level challenges in Maths, Engineering, Code-Breaking, Cartography, General Knowledge, Creative Producers, English, Art and Poetry, Science and Ideation. The girls competed with great enthusiasm, demonstrating all aspects of the IB learner profile and are to be commended for their efforts. They achieved third places in both English and General Knowledge and sixth place overall. Congratulations to Tabitha Anderson (Year 6), Zara Ball (Year 5), Charlotte Gishubl (Year 5), Rilyn Hawkins (Year 6), Laura Kingdon (Year 5), Georgia Kronja (Year 6), Madeleine Robins (Year 6) and Eirwyn Siford (Year 5) (pictured below). STEM in Schools Virtual ClassroomMid-Term break saw 76 STEM enthusiasts from Years 1 to 9 participate in the CSIRO’s STEM in Schools virtual classroom as part of National Science Week. The morning commenced with a one hour live panel webinar featuring inspiring experts working in the Australian space industry, who shared their knowledge on mission control, lasers, telescopes, space junk and black holes. Following the webinar, the girls interacted with seven science experiments organised and conducted by some inspiring Senior School girls, including elephant toothpaste, paper plane rocket launchers and blob in a bottle. New Stables for Arts Day Hobby HorsesAs part of the Senior School Arts Day staff performance last term, Administration Assistant, Anna Curry, constructed five felt, fabric and wool hobby horses to be used in the Melbourne Cup sketch. After the performance, the future of the crafty creations was uncertain, until the idea came up to donate them where they could be enjoyed - the PLC Kindergarten! Anna recently presented the horses to the Kindergarten students and explained their previous life. This tied in ideally with the Kindergarten curriculum which had just moved to a module on caring for animals and arts and crafts. Applications for each bursary open on Monday 28 August and close on Tuesday 17 October. Full details of each bursary, eligibility and the application process can be found here. Community & Service LearningWomen Experiencing Homelessness AppealDid you know that around 61% of homelessness service users in WA are women? Together with UnitingCare West, we are appealing to the PLC community to help make a difference to the women who find themselves accessing homelessness services. The number of women accessing these services is at a record level. Family and domestic violence is the main reason that women seek assistance, followed by financial crisis and the lack of affordable housing. We invite Senior School students and their families to donate new female socks, underwear and sports bras of various sizes to this cause. The items should be placed in HTG boxes. View the poster. Together, we can make a difference to women in our community who are experiencing hardship.
