Dear Friend of PLC

A Message From Head of Senior School, Rebecca Watts

Support Your Daughter Evenings

Families of our Year 8 girls were invited to join the Year 8 Support Your Daughter Evening last night, where various key staff members spoke about the ways in which, both staff and parents, can help their daughters navigate this year.

There is a recording of the night available for families who could not attend, as well as a recording from last week's Year 7 Support Your Daughter Evening.

  • Year 8 Support Your Daughter Evening Video

A reminder to our Years 9 and 10 families that your Support Your Daughter Evenings will be held on Tuesday 11 February (Year 9) and Thursday 13 February (Year 10). We strongly encourage parents and/or carers to attend, as we have arranged a special guest speaker for the events.

Swim and Dive Carnival

We have had another exciting week at PLC, with the highlight being the Inter-House Swim and Dive Carnival yesterday!

What impressed me most about this event, was the number of students who participated and the way that our girls supported each other in the stands. It was fantastic to hear the students cheering on their Houses and showing support for each other with high fives and congratulations after their events.

The day really showcased the strong sense of community at PLC. While there was a winning House at the carnival, I was also thrilled to see that everyone was willing to have a go. Whether it was being a part of a competitive event, diving in for the participation swims, taking on the role of student helper or cheering loudly for their House, all girls were involved. Thank you to all the staff and students who made this event possible, and to the parents who were able to come along and show their support.

Homework Help

I would like to remind parents and carers that there are lots of ways your children can access extra help at school. This includes accessing the services of our Homework Helpers in the Library and Innovation Centre (LIC). Our (young) Old Collegians are avilable to assist the girls with their studies after school in the LIC.

Our Homework Helpers will prioritise students in Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and students in Years 9 and 10 on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I hope your daughter takes full advantage of this opportunity.

LIC Opening Hours

Monday to Thursday: 7.30 am – 7.00 pm
Friday: 7.30 am – 3.45 pm

Driving and Safety

I would also like to remind everyone to be safe when driving around the School. Students should be picked up and dropped off from the designated slipways on McNeil and View Street. I ask that you do not drop off/pick up your daughters from other locations around the School. This ensures that students are not being placed in any risk.

- Rebecca Watts, Head of Senior School

Is Our Love Shielding Or Hurting Our Children?

Some time ago, I heard the story of a butterfly struggling to get out of its cocoon (actually called chrysalises) via a small gap. A man watched the butterfly trying to achieve the seemingly impossible and decided to help as the butterfly seemed exhausted.

He carefully cut the gap a little bigger using a pair of scissors and placed the butterfly on a table. The butterfly’s body was small and wrinkled and its wings were crumpled. The man continued to watch the butterfly, waiting for it to open its wings and fly away, but instead it dragged its body around, incapable of flight.

The story ends with the man learning that through a butterfly’s struggles to free itself from its cocoon (chrysalises), nature is training the butterfly and strengthening its wings. A butterfly needs to struggle, or at least hang upside down shortly after escaping from its cocoon, in order to force blood into its wings before the wings dry.

As parents, we want to protect our children from harm and life’s challenges. We want to offer them every opportunity to succeed, not only at school, but also in life. We also realise that life isn’t always fair - it has its ups and downs.

Like the butterfly, students need to learn to overcome challenges with a loving safety net that provide guidance and modelling and teach them micro skills which empower them to face challenges.

At PLC, we are proud to work alongside parents and use building blocks that we know will equip them for life and teach them resilience.

Junior School Family Barbecue

Thank you to all the families who attended the Junior School Family Barbecue and Support Your Daughter Evening on Tuesday. Although the weather was less than ideal, it was wonderful to see so many members of our Junior School in attendance.

The Family Barbecue was also a fantastic opportunity to discuss the new STEM Room, which will open in Term 2. The Old Collegians' Association are funding the creation of the new Junior School STEM Room, for which we are extremely thankful! We thank the OCA for their commitment to the School.

Gifted and Talented News

A Brief Outline of PLC's Gifted and Talented Programme

As we are a non-selective school, we do not run a separate Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programme. Our strength as an institution is largely due to our inclusive policies that celebrate diversity and inclusion. We also recognise that students mature and develop at different stages in their educational journey and as such, we provide opportunities for all students to facilitate their learning. More information about how we cater for students who are gifted and talented can be found here.

Student Achievements

Hannah (Year 7) and her Futsal team represented WA in the National Futsal Championships, walking away with a silver medal. Due to Hannah's impressive performance at the championships, she has been selected for the Australian 13 Girls Futsal Team who will compete in Spain at the Costa Blanca Cup from 3 - 12 July!

Isabel (Year 9) recently competed at the U14 Waterpolo National Championships with her team from Melville Water Polo Club. Melville bought home the gold medal and Isabel was awarded MVG (most valuable goalkeeper)!

Congratulations to both of these girls!
