Friends knew him as ‘DOS’, a surf lifesaver who put his heart and soul into building communities and uniting clubs. The memorial for Dennis O’Sullivan is 10am Wednesday 26 February at Port Macquarie Crematorium and Memorial Gardens. Aussie Lifesavers Support New Gaza Surf ClubThe Palestinian territory of Gaza isn’t well known for its beaches. Its association with the Australian Surf Life Saving movement, however, dates back to World War II. Now two Gazan surf lifesavers are determined to set up a new Gaza Beach Surf Life Saving Club - with the assistance of North Steyne SLSC in Manly and the Gaza Surf Project. Dry Lifesavers Take to the SkiesSurf Life Saving NSW has had a long association with aviation over its 112-year history – operating both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters for search and rescue and marine creature surveillance. Now a new breed of ‘dry lifesaver’ is being trained to use unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) technology to help keep beachgoers safe on the NSW coastline. Five Minutes with Hayley SmithHayley Smith from Cudgen Headland SLSC is attending her 10th State Champs this year. At 18, Hayley has developed into a talented surf competitor representing the Far North Coast branch and the NSW Country team at the Interstate Championships. On the Mic with HaroldHarold Marshall is a member the 2018/19 NSW Club of the Year, Umina SLSC. Not only is he attending the State Champs as the proud parent of upcoming athletes (Davara, 14 and Lucy, 12) and an official, but he will also be the host of the 2020 live stream and highlights show to be aired on Fox Sports. Five Minutes with Tom BridgeTom Bridge from Avoca SLSC will compete in his last Your local club Inclusive Champs this year ahead of transitioning into the Under 12s Nippers program in 2021. Grants & Fundraising Mental Health First Aid CourseOne in five Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. The Australian Lifesaving Academy NSW is now delivering the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – Standard 2 Day Course as authored by Mental Health First Aid Australia, delivered by instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia. The course will equip participants with the skills necessary to help someone they may be concerned about. For more information please contact the Australian Lifesaving Academy NSW on 1300 766 257. Grant funding is an ideal way to obtain equipment, infrastructure or program funding for your club. In support of SLSCs in NSW, SLSNSW provides a professional grant service at no fee to NSW SLSCs through Surf Life Saving Foundation’s Grant Seeking Unit (GSU). The GSU is a national grant research and writing support unit for SLS entities across Australia.
