Te Tini a Tuna – Kaituna Action Plan now online We are pleased to now be able to share our finalised Te Tini a Tuna – Kaituna Action Plan 2019-29 document with you. The Action Plan was approved late last year by Te Maru o Kaituna River Authority (TMOK) to ‘give life’ to Kaituna he taonga tuku iho - the Kaituna River Document. It outlines what will be done by TMOK partners over the next ten years to deliver on the vision, objectives and outcomes of the Kaituna River Document. Thank you to everyone that provided feedback on the draft plan during consultation last August. The final version of Te Tini a Tuna was re-shaped to reflect that feedback. It will act as a working guide towards achieving our future vision for the Kaituna River: E ora ana te mauri o te Kaituna, e tiakina ana hoki mō ngā whakatupuranga ō nāianei, ō muri nei hoki. The Kaituna River is in a healthy state and protected for current and future generations. Te Tini a Tuna includes three priority actions, two supporting actions and 18 projects all focused on:

Kia hoki mai te Kaituna ki Maketu - Returning the Kaituna to MaketuThe Maketu community came together on 12 February to celebrate the opening of the Kaituna River re-diversion control gates and the partial return of freshwater flows into Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi/Maketu Estuary. Congratulations to Bay of Plenty Regional Council and J Swap Contractors Ltd. who have completed the $16.6m project on budget, and five months ahead of schedule. In her speech at the event, Bay of Plenty Regional Council Deputy Chair and TMOK member Jane Nees recognized the huge efforts from everyone that assisted with the day, and to all those that have been involved in the project along the way. See highlights from the day in the video below. Further videos, including of speeches given at the event, are available on Youtube. The opening is a significant milestone for tangata whenua, the community and for TMOK. The Kaituna River re-diversion and Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi/Maketū Estuary enhancement project has built momentum that TMOK will now build on as we deliver on Te Tini a Tuna - the Kaituna Action Plan. Project six of the Action Plan specifically provides for the development of a post re-diversion enhancement project that will involve tangata whenua, environmental care groups and the Maketu community in identifying and prioritising restoration tasks to continue to bring life back to Te Awa o Ngātoroirangi Maketu Estuary.
