4th Annual Conference 6-7 July - Registration Opens in Early February

Registration for the 4th Annual Conference of the Centre for Industrial Sustainability opens next week. The conference will take place at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge from 6-7 July. Eco-efficiency Webinar on 5th February

The Centre for Industrial Sustainability will be holding a webinar on, "Eco-efficiency: New understanding and emerging tools" from 4-5pm on February 5. The webinar will be hosted by Dr Peter Ball from Cranfield University,  Dr Mélanie Despeisse  from the IfM and PhD researcher Aanand Davé from Cranfield. More information on joining the webinar here.

Dr Peter Ball and PhD researcher Miying Yang represented the Centre at the last EPSRC UK-China Sustainable Global Manufacturing network meeting at Brunel University in November [more].

New Project on Efficient Manufacturing CdTe Solar Cells at Loughborough

Dr Elliot Woolley started work in January as the Principal Investigator on the project, 'High Speed Energy Efficient Manufacturing of Cadmium Telluride Solar Cells', with Loughborough colleagues Dr Gianfranco Claudio and Professor John Tyrer and industrial partner Power Vision Limited. The project was funded by an EPSRC Call on Energy Resilient Manufacturing and will continue until July 2016 [more].

Centre Researchers Contribute to National Academic Debate on Business Model Innovation

The Institute for Manufacturing in Cambridge hosted a national academic workshop on “Business Model Innovation” on the 8th December 2014. The purpose of the event was to gather leading UK academics who are currently investigating the subject of business model innovation to discuss the challenges to businesses and the future of the academic field. Dr Doroteya Vladimirova gave a talk on the Centre’s work in the field of business model innovation for sustainability and sustainable value creation. The event was also attended by Centre’s PhD researchers Sudhir Rama Murthy, Kirsten van Fossen and Na Jiao.

Webinar on Enabling Innovation for Sustainable Manufacturing

Prof Steve Evans, Dr Doroteya Vladimirova, PhD researchers Miying Yang and Aanand Davé, and Ian Bamford delivered a webinar for iema on ‘Enabling Innovation for Sustainable Manufacturing’ on 7 January 2015.  The webinar explored some of the practical tools being released from the Centre for Industrial Sustainability. Centre Researchers Lead Workshops in Sri Lanka and Vietnam

PhD researcher Lloyd Fernando and Prof Steve Evans led two-day workshops on Planning for a Sustainable and Resilient Future in Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The workshop in Vietnam was for employees of jeans manufacturer Saitex, and in Sri Lanka, the workshop attendees were from two leading apparel manufactures, Brandix and MAS Holdings [more].

Feasibility Funding Opportunity: Where next for Industrial Sustainability research?

Today is the closing date to submit proposals for the EPSRC Centre for Industrial Sustainability's call for feasibility studies in the field of industrial sustainability. Awards will be up to £50,000 with a maximum duration of nine months and are to commence by July 2015.    Awardees will be announced at the end of March.  More information about the call here.

Keynote at Sporting Goods Manufacturing Forum

Steve Evans and Dai Morgan participated in the World Federation Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) Manufacturing Forum 2014, 'How can design and manufacturing embrace?' at the Porsche Centre in Leipzig Germany on 13 - 14 November. Steve gave a keynote talk on the first day and also facilitated a high-level panel discussion with leaders in the sporting goods industry [more].

PhD Researcher Ergun Gungor Looks at Changeover Processes in Unilever Factories

PhD researcher Ergun Gungor has been visiting Unilever factories over the past 6 months to learn about changeover operations in manufacturing firms.  The first visit was to a personal care factory in Missouri, USA where Ergun investigated the economic and environmental impacts of the factory's changeover operations as well as the root causes of these impacts and the factors that escalate them [more].

Centre participation at the Sustainable Apparel Coalition meeting

Steve Evans and Lloyd Fernando attended the Sustainable Apparel Coalition meeting held in Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. The event included brands, retailers, manufacturers, government, NGOs, and academic experts, representing more than a third of the global apparel and footwear market. Discussions focused on the industry’s 2020 vision [more].

Centre Researcher leads workshop at ABIS/CISL Colloquium

Dr Nancy Bocken together with Jeremy Bassett from Unilever (Unilever Ventures) led workshops on 'Disruptive Innovation' for the annual colloquium of The Academy of Business in Society (ABIS) and Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL)  'Transforming Tomorrow: Leadership for a Sustainable Future '. The workshops on radical innovation and sustainability were well-attended by academics and industrialists from all over the world.

Centre PhD Researchers in China

Centre PhD researchers Miying Yang and Yuan Tao have recently been on placements at Universities in China. Miying spent 8 weeks (two 4 week visits) at Zhejiang University in the city of Hangzhou China and Yuan was on a 4 week placement at Harbin Institute of Technology [more].

Ioannis Mastoris visits ABB in Sweden

PhD researcher Ioannis Mastoris has been visiting ABB Corporate Research Centre at Vasteras in Sweden.  Ioannis' visits have been to plan and then collect data on the sustainability related intellectual capital of ABB in Sweden and to identify improvement opportunities towards the ABB 2020 vision on sustainability.

Good bye to Dr Jae-Hwan Park

After more than two years as a lead researcher in the Centre for Industrial sustainability Dr Jae-Hwan Park has taken a new job as a lecturer in International Managment and Innovation at the Business School in Middlesex University London. Jae-Hwan has led various UN-funded research projects for the Centre in particular focusing on industry sustainability in developing countries.  He will be greatly missed by Centre staff and members! Jae-Hwan will remain connected to the Centre and can still be contacted on jhp37@cam.ac.uk.

Dr Nancy Bocken in a new role at TU Delft

Nancy has started a new role as an Associate Professor at TU Delft, Netherlands. It is a special tenure track as part of the TU Delft Technology Fellowship programme. She will keep a part time post at CIS and will continue to work as a project manager at project REDRESS with M&S. You can continue to contact Nancy at nmpb2@cam.ac.uk.

Many congratulations to Centre doctoral researcher Madeleine Yates who completed her PhD last November with her thesis entitled, 'Assessing the environmental impact of single-use medical device disposal’.

Wedding Bells for PhD Researcher

Centre for Industrial Sustainability PhD researcher, Lloyd Fernando, married Nilumi Withanage on the 13th of December 2014 in Sri Lanka. Prof Steve Evans and Centre PhD researcher Ioannis Mastoris were also present at the celebrations. Many congratulations to Lloyd and Nilumi!
