Click here Dear Friend of PLC On Tuesday, more than 50 of our Senior School students with a keen interest in physics, had the incredible opportunity to meet 2018 Australian of the Year and quantum physicist, Professor Michelle Simmons. It was Professor Simmons’ first visit to Western Australia since being named Australian of the Year on 26 January and thanks to Auspire – Australia Day Council of WA, PLC was her only school visit during her time in Perth. Professor Simmons spoke to the students about her own education, at a co-educational comprehensive school in the UK where she was one of only two students to achieve A-levels. Considered one of the world’s top scientists, she has pioneered research that could lead to a quantum leap in computing. Since arriving in Australia from Britain 18 years ago, Professor Simmons has transformed the University of NSW Quantum Physics Department into a world leader in advanced computer systems. In 2012, her team created the world’s first transistor made from a single atom, along with the world’s thinnest wire. At the forefront of what she calls the “space race of the computing era”, Professor Simmons aims to build a quantum computer able to solve problems in minutes that would otherwise take thousands of years. Such a discovery has the potential to revolutionise drug design, weather forecasting, self-driving vehicles, artificial intelligence and more. Professor Simmon’s message to the girls was to dream big, challenge themselves and achieve ambitious goals in science. It was an honour to have been able to welcome Professor Simmons to PLC and for the girls to have been able to talk with her about her research and life experience. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Acting Principal Friday 15 June - Saturday 16 JuneDance Showcase, Hazel Day Drama Centre Saturday 23 JuneHead of the River, Champion Lakes Monday 2 July - Friday 20 JulyJunior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Thursday 16 AugustSenior School Arts Day, save the date Saturday 25 AugustFarm2Fork, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date Winter Warmer AppealPLC’s Term 2 appeal is our community’s annual donation to the thousands in Perth unable to access food due to financial hardship. Please give generously with donations of food items listed on the poster provided here. Our House Tutor Group (HTG) goal is to challenge each HTG to collect and bring in all items from the list. Every week in your shopping, please consider making a small act to make a big difference to others. Donations will be gathered in HTG collection boxes until Tuesday 26 June, when UnitingCare West will distribute to local community members in need. Themed Dress DayThe Term 2 free dress day will be held on Thursday 28 June with the theme 'Where I am From – International Dress'. The optional fundraiser supports our two World Vision sponsored children and the many projects organised by UnitingCare West to support those most vulnerable in our community. Students who opted in to participate, donated $10 in Term 1 for the privilege of wearing themed dress across three free dress days this year. Click here to view the poster. Upcoming Lighthouse EventsApplying Bibliotherapy to Your Daily LifeDuring this workshop we will share the books that have most impacted and influenced our lives in a connected group setting. We will explore how books can be used to know and understand yourself better, as well as strategies for putting your reading time to best use, and some literary recommendations for guiding your personal development journey. Date: Wednesday 25 July 2018 - Chonny James, Director of Wellbeing Student SafetyWet weather always poses a challenge for families at school pick up time. We ask parents to remember that despite the rain and windy conditions, we still need to follow our slipway rules to ensure the safety of all students. If your daughter is not ready when you arrive at the slipway, please support the supervising staff by doing a lap and returning when your daughter is ready to collect. This will also help to minimise congestion on McNeil Street and The Esplanade. I would also like to remind the PLC community, that during drop off and pick up times, the Junior School carpark is for our parents who have children in Pre-Kindy, Kindy and Pre-Primary only. This enables parents with younger students to safely assist their child to and from from their vehicle. The restricted times are 7.30 am to 9.00 am; and 2.30 pm to 3.45 pm. Please be mindful of this when attending school events. A reminder also to Early Years parents that they must display their coloured parking cards when parking in the Junior School carpark. The blue disabled parking bay should be available to current ACROD Parking Permit holders at all times. Your assistance with keeping the younger members of our School community safe is greatly appreciated. Farewell to Julie SampsonCongratulations to Julie Sampson who has been successful in gaining a new position at Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne. Sincere thanks to Julie who has provided such loving care to our younger students for the past four years at PLC. We wish Julie well as she heads off at the end of this term. Winter Holiday ClubJoin in the fun these school holidays! Holiday Club includes a variety of incursions, excursions and in-programme theme days. You can come for one day, every day or anything in between. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School JUNIOR SCHOOL KEY EVENTSJunior School Assembly – hosted by Year 3Date: Friday 15 June Junior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Date: Monday 2 July - Friday 20 July Parent/Teacher interviews Date: Monday 25 June – Wednesday 27 June Final Three WeeksAs we approach the final three weeks of what has been a very busy term, it is important for our girls to take a breath, gather themselves and keep focussing right up to the end of term. They are all feeling a little tired and the third last week is traditionally quite a busy one. I have seen and heard a number of girls talking about how anxious they are as I walk around the campus, and how many tests and assessments they still have to complete. This can seem a little overwhelming, but I recommend that they tackle each day on its own. Once the day begins, don’t look ahead, just focus on this one day. At the end of that day there is a sense of completion and satisfaction that one more test or assessment is finished. Camberra TourThe Year 9 girls are anticipating the Canberra Tour in the company of Scotch College with great excitement. The signs are good for a healthy snow season, and this means that our girls will come back with stories of new challenges, exciting adventures and new friendships. We hope that their experiences in our nation’s capital will match this excitement. I look forward to seeing some of the photographs and hearing some of the stories of their time away. Winter UniformThe girls have welcomed the change to the winter uniform and it was most timely as we had such a cold week last week. I would like to remind the girls that they must have their blazer and their tie for Principal’s assembly and that on these very cold mornings the added layer of the School jumper is a welcome addition, but not a replacement for the blazer. Year 10 Subject SelectionOur Year 10 girls and their families have been working through the process of subject selection for Year 11 and although this can be a stressful time, hopefully each of you are well on the way to subject choices that you have considered, discussed and compiled in a thoughtful and measured way. The final day for submission is this Friday 15 June. House Athletics CarnivalFinally, we are anticipating some exciting competition in the upcoming House Athletics Carnival, to be run next Tuesday 19 June. It may be a little cool and possibly wet, but I know that the enthusiasm of the girls and their support for their teams will make for a great day. Good luck to all the girls and all the Houses. - Jennifer Crisp, Deputy Head of Senior School (9 & 10) SportInter-house Athletics Carnival Bus Sign UpDay students requiring transport to or from the WA Athletics Stadium, received information how to register online to book a seat on the PLC bus, earlier this week. Bookings are essential, as the number of buses departing from and returning to PLC will depend on the number of students who will require the service. Student names will be checked against the registration list, so names must be registered in order to ride the bus. Boarding students have already been allocated a seat and are not required to complete the signup. If girls do not require return transport to PLC, their parent or guardian will need to collect them from the WA Athletics Stadium by 2.45 pm. Students who have booked a place on the bus or who have not been collected by 2.45 pm will be returned to PLC by bus. Parents or guardians will then need to collect those students from outside the Boarding House. Non-participantsGirls not participating in or helping at the carnival are expected to attend and support their Houses. Inter-house Athletics Carnival General Information
