Family Medicine is ushering in Spring with awards, new team members, professional development opportunities and events for the family! No Images? Click here Family MattersYour updates from the University of Alberta Department of Family MedicineApril 2018 Message From the Chair
April has been a busy month, as you can see from this issue of the newsletter. Looking over the draft, a theme jumped out at me: the Department is very much “out there”, in the community. It’s very much in keeping with the values of family medicine and of our department. Sometimes it’s hard to tell where our research and teaching end and community service starts. The CHANGE program (in this case also a TV program!), the 5As Team work, and the MARD centre are great examples. They’re research programs that partner with and offer value to the community… or are they community outreach programs that do important research? The answer of course is “yes,” and that’s how it should be for family medicine. Our engagement with the Zhejiang University hospital in Yiwu, China, to help them develop the expertise to develop family medicine in the Chinese context is similar. It’s a service program to help China build the primary care workforce it needs, or it’s an educational program, or it’s educational and health services research. Yes. From local to international, and everything in between, we’re out there and making a difference. - Dr. Lee Green, Chair, Department of Family Medicine Martin Moran Receives

Lee Green, Sudha Koppula and John Chmelicek made a whirlwind trip to Yiwu, China in April as part of Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry supporting family medicine curriculum development in China. The physicians involved will visit the University of Alberta to learn more about curriculum development and then return to Yiwu to begin the process of developing their own family medicine curriculum. |
