Click here Mihi from the Chair | JAMIE TUUTATenā tātou katoa I'm pleased to report that at last month’s special general meeting at Urenui Pa, eligible members voted unanimously to pass the resolution to adopt the proposed changes to the Rūnanga charter. The amended charter will take effect once we receive confirmation from Te Ohu Kaimoana that the changes comply with the Maori Fisheries Act 2004. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend the hui and vote on this important kaupapa. Many years, and a lot of hard work went into ensuring the review took place in a way that allowed uri from all over the motu from as far South as the Chatham Islands all the way to Auckland, to have their say and contribute whakaaro. It's an important milestone for the Runanga and we'll soon see the impacts of the review in terms of improving the way in which we do things. I also want to mihi to one of our rangatahi, Daniel Potaka, who made the New Zealand Maori Rugby League 17s team earlier this year, and recently played with the team at the Nationals in Rotorua. Its great to see our young ones excelling in what they do. There are a lot of hui and wānanga happening all around the Taranaki rohe in the coming months. We have our own maunga wānanga happening early in September, and later this month Te Reo o Taranaki are holding a reo wānanga at Waiokura Marae. I encourage all of our whanau to get involved and reconnect as much as possible. Enjoy this months pānui. Taranaki schoolboy, Daniel Potaka, is making a name for himself on the rugby league field. At just 17-years-old, he has been selected on the
NZ Maori Rugby League team, following a stellar performance at the recent NZMRL Rangatahi tournament in Rotorua. “I always knew he had it in him – it was just getting that breakthrough he needed. He’s been dedicated to his training.” Daniel’s future goals are to attend university or play league in Australia’s NRL. He’s already signed with player/agent Wayde Rushton from Rush Sports and is hoping to trial for a couple of Under 18 teams later this year. We wish you all the best Daniel. We’ll be keeping an eye out for you in the future.
