No Images? Click here November 1 2018 GP registrar workshop in Alice SpringsThe biannual GP registrar workshop is being held this week in Alice Springs with a whopping 47 GP registrars attending. It's an intensive three day program including a musculo-skeletal session with Joshua Tidswell, ECG with Dr Hubert van Doorn and women's health with Dr Paul Rivalland. GP registrars will also receive a full day of cultural education with NTGPE cultural educators Dr Olivia O'Donoghue, Dr Simone Raye and Richie Fejo. The next workshop will be held in Darwin in April 2019. RMA18 in DarwinNTGPE attended the Rural Medicine Australia 2018 (RMA18) at the Darwin Convention Centre last week, October 25-27. This annual conference and research health forum hosted by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) attracted a diverse and collaborative community of junior doctors, students, educators, academics, and medical practitioners who are passionate about generalist medicine in rural and remote communities. NTGPE presented on a number of topics, including; NTGPE Cultural Educator, Richie Fejo opened the conference with an informative Welcome to Country which helped set the tone for the next three days. NTGPE Medical Educator, Dr Olivia O'Donoghue presented a powerful and inspiring keynote address providing insight into the people and events influencing her GP journey. NTGPE Pastoral Care team, Janelle Melbourne and Sue Irvin shared their experience and approach with supporting GP registrars working and living remote, featuring a video of NTGPE GP registrar, Dr Jyothi Vardhi talking about his remote experience in Ngukurr. NTGPE Cultural Education team, Elisabeth Heenan, Dr Olivia O'Donoghue, Richie Fejo and Patricia Rankine presented on integrating Indigenous health and cultural education for GP registrars and the traditional kinship system. Finally, thank you to all the staff, supervisors, registrars and doctors who wore the medical cheekydog shirts throughout the conference and helped promote working in the NT. RMA19 has been announced and will be held on the Gold Cost, October 23-26, 2019. Congratulations ACRRM fellowsNTGPE extends a heart felt congratulations to all the ACRRM GP registrars who have achieved fellowship this year. It was great to see NTGPE GP registrar, Dr David Moniz (pictured right) receive his fellowship at the ACRRM ceremony in Darwin on October 25 as part of the RMA18 conference. Board strategy meeting in DarwinThe NTGPE board held a two day strategy meeting in Darwin last week, incorporating the final board meeting of the year. The meeting included discussions about NT GP registrar numbers, transition of the training program to ACRRM and the RACGP, the role of GP supervisors, and communication with our stakeholders. The board spoke to the two colleges about the special context of education and training GP registrars in the NT. The board also met with Professor Paul Worley, the National Rural Health Commissioner, about the national rural generalist pathway and acknowledged him for his contribution as a Director of NTGPE from 2012 to 2016. Gunbalanya hosts Health Workforce QueenslandLast week Andrew Hayward and Deb James from Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ), the administers of the John Flynn Placement Program (JFPP), visited Gunbalanya in West Arnhem with NTGPE JFPP Manager Sue Irvin and NTGPE JFPP Officer, Lyndsey Hamilton. Sue and Lyndsey are responsible for coordinating the program in the Northern Territory and supporting the students on their placements. It was a great opportunity for Andrew and Deb to see the diverse environment JFPP students experience in remote NT. During their visit, they caught up with NTGPE GP registrar Dr Arnab Roy who is on his first remote placement at Gunbalanya Health Centre. KFP exam preparation sessionGP registrars sitting the KFP exam in February 2019 are invited to an exam preparation session with NTGPE Medical Educators, Dr Olivia O'Donoghue and Dr Kishan Pandithage. This session will provide participants with practical advice and tips on how to pass the KFP. Food and refreshments will be provided. A dial-in option is available for those that live outside of Darwin.
