Fünf Schweizer Kohorten treten dem internationalen Maelstrom-Katalog bei

Das Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) setzt sich für einen FAIRen* und nachhaltigen Umgang mit Gesundheitsdaten ein. Im Rahmen eines neuen Förderprogramms ermöglicht SPHN Schweizer Kohortenstudien, ihre Meta-Daten im Maelstrom-Katalog zu präsentieren. Damit soll die wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit international gefördert und die Weiterverwendung dieser wertvollen Daten zu Forschungszwecken in der Schweiz vorangetrieben werden.

Die Schweiz verfügt über eine lange Tradition von qualitativ hochwertigen Kohortenstudien, d. h. multizentrisch angelegte Studien mit longitudinalem Design. Diese Studien – populations-basiert oder indikationsspezifisch – laufen bzw. liefen meist über mehrere Jahrzehnte und enthalten deshalb umfangreiche Datenmengen. Um das Potential dieser wertvollen und kostenintensiven Datensammlungen besser auszuschöpfen, hat SPHN ein neues Förderprogramm lanciert.

Der renommierte Maelstrom-Katalog dient der Sichtbarmachung von Informationen von über 240 Studien aus der ganzen Welt, die in mehreren internationalen Netzwerken zusammengefasst sind. Eine Suchmaske, die über das Internet frei zugänglich ist, ermöglicht Forschenden und anderen Interessierten den Katalog zu durchsuchen und Informationen über die Daten sowie über den möglichen Zugang zu diesen zu finden.

Im Rahmen eines vom SPHN Data Coordination Center (DCC) lancierten Pilotprojektes (2020) wurden die Meta-Daten von fünf Schweizer Kohorten nach dem Maelstrom-Schema katalogisiert und harmonisiert. Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss der Pilotphase und der Integration von über 60'000 Studienvariablen, hat SPHN im Juni 2021 eine offene Ausschreibung lanciert, um weiteren Kohortenstudien den Anschluss an den Maelstrom-Katalog zu ermöglichen. Nach sorgfältiger Evaluation der eingegangenen Bewerbungen werden die folgenden fünf Kohortenstudien unterstützt: 

• Swiss Transplant Cohort Study (STCS)
• Lausanne Cohort 65+ (Lc65+)
• Swiss Inflammatory Bowel Disease Cohort Study (SIBDCS)
• Swiss Systemic lupus erythematosus Cohort Study (SSCS)
• Swiss Clinical Quality Management in Rheumatic Diseases (SCQM)

Diese fünf Kohortenstudien werden somit in das SPHN Cohort Consortium Netzwerk integriert. SPHN übernimmt die Kosten, die seitens Maelstrom für diese Integration anfallen.

Sensitive health data cannot be openly accessible to third parties, but taking regulatory requirements into account, the data should be FAIR – also with reproducibility and sustainability in mind. Five additional Swiss cohorts can join the international Maelstrom catalogue

The Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) is committed to FAIR* and sustainable use of health data. With a new funding program, SPHN enables Swiss cohort studies to integrate their metadata in the international Maelstrom catalogue. The funding program thus strengthens international scientific collaborations and advances the reuse of these valuable data for research purposes in Switzerland. 

Switzerland has a long-standing tradition of high-quality cohort studies, that is, longitudinal, multicenter studies ranging from population-based to indication-specific studies. As their runtime often spans several decades, the cohorts contain extensive amounts of data. To better use the potential of these valuable and cost-intensive data collections, SPHN has launched a new funding program.

The renowned Maelstrom catalogue scheme enables the visualization of comprehensive information from more than 240 studies from around the world, which are grouped into several research networks. A freely accessible web-based, user-friendly search tool allows researchers and other interested parties to search the catalog for information about the existing data and how to access them.

In the context of a pilot project launched by the SPHN Data Coordination Center (DCC) in 2020, meta-data from five Swiss cohorts were cataloged and harmonized according to the Maelstrom scheme. Following the successful completion of the pilot and the integration of over 60,000 study variables, SPHN launched an open call for applications in June 2021 to allow further cohort studies to join the Maelstrom catalogue. After a careful evaluation of the applications, the following five cohort studies will be supported: 

• Swiss Transplant Cohort Study (STCS)
• Lausanne Cohort 65+ (Lc65+)
• Swiss Inflammatory Bowel Disease Cohort Study (SIBDCS)
• Swiss Systemic lupus erythematosus Cohort Study (SSCS)
• Swiss Clinical Quality Management in Rheumatic Diseases (SCQM)

These five cohorts will join the SPHN Cohort Consortium network. SPHN will cover the costs incurred by Maelstrom for the integration of their meta-data.
