Chancellor’s Spring Statement: a summary

A ‘Tiggerish’ Chancellor Philip Hammond delivered a Spring Statement with few surprises on Wednesday.

The good news, he told a packed House of Commons, was that inflation and borrowing are on the way down while economic growth was better than expected and employment figures are on the way up. Economic growth for 2018 will be 1.5%, better than forecast, although it will fall to 1.3% for both 2019 and 2020. Inflation is set to fall to 2% by the end of this year.

Taxpayers with overseas interests must disclose unpaid tax by September
 

Taxpayers who know or suspect that they have unpaid tax relating to overseas assets, income or activities need to act before the deadline of 30 September 2018 to avoid incurring much higher penalties for non-compliance.

Making Tax Digital: Entering public beta for Income Tax
 

HMRC has entered into the public beta testing for the Income Tax service as part of Making Tax Digital (MTD).  Following the decision last summer to slow the pace of mandation for Income Tax, HMRC has continued to test the service on a small scale with businesses, agents and software developers.

Push to encourage take-up of shared parental leave
 

The government has launched a new ‘Share the Joy’ campaign, promoting shared parental leave rights for parents, after discovering take up of the scheme could be as low as 2%

The workplace right for eligible parents allows them to share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay after having a baby. They can take time off separately or they can be at home together for up to six months.

International - Japan government reiterates economy is gradually recovering
 

The Japanese government left unchanged its assessment that the economy is gradually recovering, suggesting a recent growth streak is likely to continue as consumers spend more, exports rise and companies increase investment.

The government did change the wording of its assessment for consumer prices in March to say they are gradually rising. Last month, the government said consumer prices were flat.
