No Images? Click here As we are now at the halfway point of the season it is important to reflect on how far the club has come in such a short space of time. During this time I have coached the Under 16s Boys in the Tri-Series recently held in Cairns and also done some work with the Girls Youth teams. It has been fantastic to get involved with some of the youth players in Cairns and great to see that we really have some good young players in the region who have an exciting future within the game. Even though we had a mixed bag of results with the Under 16s during the Tri-series beating Mackay heavily and losing to Townsville, it was good to see some of the region’s talent wearing the Cairns FC uniform and representing the region with pride. Long may it continue. From a senior perspective it has been a real rollercoaster start to the first half of the season. We have had some excellent results both in the league and the FFA Cup, however we have also suffered some disappointing results in games that we should really have taken all three points from. This has put us in the bottom half of the table albeit in a strong position to secure NPL football in the club’s inaugural season. We must acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the senior staff and players during this difficult period. Their attitude and work rate during training and on match days has been superb and as we move forward into the second half of the season I am sure their hard work and loyalty will be rewarded with results on and off the park. One of the major positives that has been documented over the past month has been the inclusion of local players into the first team squad. These players have more than stood up to the task and brought a fresh injection of energy into training which was needed at this point in the season. A really big thank you must go out to all the local clubs in the area for their support of the club in releasing players for training sessions and fixtures. As we move in to the second half of the season we have some exciting times ahead. We play Mackay Crusaders in Round 7 of the FFA Cup with the opportunity to move in to the National Round of 32. What a fantastic event it would be if we could draw an A-League team in this round and showcase everything that Cairns has to offer. Lastly I would like to take this opportunity to thank sponsors and supporters for their ongoing support. Without you there is no Cairns FC. I look forward to rewarding you with some exciting games ahead. Kind Regards, ROUND 15 RESULTS (26 May):NEXT HOME GAME: It’s been a busy couple of months for Cairns FC; a hectic game schedule for the first team, recent discussions with Football Queensland regarding the state of the game in Far North Queensland and throughout the state, recently having 5 of our local female players identified into state squads and the commencement of the Talent Support Program for both boys and girls. Congratulations to Under 14 representatives Aleeah Davern (Stratford Dolphins), Tonia-Maree Rantucci (Mareeba Bulls), Mia Bailey (JCU Strikers), whilst Molly Waddingham and Jemma Morrison (Edge Hill United) were successful in securing a place with the Under 15 State squad. All girls are presently working and being monitored within the TSP as they prepare for the National Championships in October at Coffs Harbour. Our Regional Talent Support Program (TSP) is now operational and based at West Barlow Park. Players in the TSP train with Cairns FC coaches once a week and return to their clubs to play regular games within the local competition. Emphasis on the TSP is to identify potential youth talent and equip them with the necessary tools to be competitive at the next level, including state representation and beyond. The TSP plays monthly games against our NPL neighbours, NQ United FC (Townsville) and Magpies Crusaders FC (Mackay). These games are used to measure the development streams and to provide some player identification opportunities such as State Squads in the Under 13-14 age groups and A-League academy opportunities for older age groups. Our discussions with Football Queensland have highlighted the lack of opportunity for regional based players, and some suggestions have been put on the table for discussion as how to best close the gaping ‘black holes’ for player development in Regional Queensland and in particular, Cairns and its surrounding regions. Several suggestions such as the introduction of a Skills Acquisition Program for players aged 9–12 could prove enormously beneficial for technical development of our aspiring young players, the introduction of a Country State Championships could provide a highly competitive playing environment and identification process which is more inclusive than the current system, or lack thereof. So, keep your eye on this space so that we can keep you apprised of any new developments. We recently hosted the first of the Northern Tri-Series games with NQ United and Magpies Crusaders visiting with their respective TSP and NPL Academy playing groups. In addition to this our Brisbane Roar Academy squads (Under 9–12) also played providing some exciting matches and a great challenge to players. It is evident that we still have a lot to improve upon, and it clearly shows that full-time programs provide a greater impact as far as individual player development (Technical, tactical, physical and psychological) compared to part-time player programs. That said, the first of the Northern Tri-Series games provided some good quality matches against structured and well coached opposition; this type of player challenge is needed to gauge how we’re progressing and to identify potential talented players for further opportunities. The next Northern Tri-Series was held on the weekend (26-27 May), hosted in Mackay. It was a great success! This will be the last long travel program for the year for the Tri-Series. At the last games in Cairns it was agreed to
reduce travel and cost we will centralise the remaining Tri-Series in Townsville as one day events (Sundays) and play double headers.
