Top 100 Golf Courses "BiteSize" - October 2015

Our October BiteSize update focuses on our latest 2016 re-rankings for Ireland and Scotland. The process started more than twelve months ago after we decided to cast our net much wider and solicit opinions from clubs across the three countries. Naively, we failed to appreciate how much work was involved in the exercise, however we genuinely feel we’ve uncovered some lesser known gems across Ireland and Scotland that otherwise would have remained below the radar.

We recently received strong feedback stating in no uncertain terms that our Nigerian golf course rankings were less than acceptable. We’ve put that right during October and we’re grateful for the assistance that was generously provided by a member of the Nigeria-UK Golfing Association.

Also in this edition, we review David Worley’s newest publication, Golf in the Heather and Gorse, where the author focuses on seventy-seven of the finest inland courses in England and Scotland.

Top 25 Golf Courses of Northern Ireland 2016

We’ve been ranking golf courses biennially in our Northern Ireland chart since 2006 so this is the 6th edition of our listings for the six Ulster counties. There’s nothing too dramatic to report this time around as twelve of the courses (including all those in the top six places) remain in exactly the same position as last time around.

Top 100 Golf Courses in the Republic of Ireland 2016

Top 100 Golf Courses maintains a ranking chart for the twenty-six counties that comprise the Republic of Ireland and we revise the positions in that list every two years. It’s now time to publish our biennial update for the Emerald Isle so, without further ado, we present the latest edition of our Irish Top 100.

Top 100 Golf Courses of Scotland 2016

At the top of the new Caledonian listings, the Old Course at St Andrews remains at number 1, a position it’s held since 2012. Host course for the Open Championship an incredible 29 times, the Old Lady has certainly stood the golfing test of time. A reviewer from last month described it thus: “If you love golf, I mean have a real passion for the game and its history, this is the one course you MUST play.”

Top 5 Golf Courses of Nigeria 2016

Our Nigerian No. 1 is Smokin Hills, a recent Ron Garl design in Ondo State which has been described by our correspondent Charles as “head and shoulders above all others, however being remote makes it a difficult one to get to. Once you are there, though, you know for sure this is the best design and build Nigeria has to offer.”

Golf in the Heather and Gorse

David Worley’s new book Golf in the Heather and Gorse is a follow up to his two previous titles, Journey through the Links and Another Journey through the Links, where the author wrote extensively about his playing experiences at virtually every links course in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This time around, he concentrates on the non-links layouts of Scotland and England.
