Why is Shaun the Sheep going to the Moon and how you can watch the Artemis I launch.Shaun the Sheep in training for the Artemis I Launch It's been nearly 50 years since humans last travelled to the Moon. NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) are launching the Artemis I mission in the coming days. This is the first step in our return to the Moon and further travels into the Solar System. You can read more about NASA's return to the Moon in our article here. The launch window is for two hours from 10.30pm Monday 29th Aug 2022 Eastern Australia Time. (10pm Adelaide, 8.30pm Perth.) You can watch the launch live via: With all space launches there can be delays due to wide range of reasons including weather and technical issues. If the launch is delayed by more a couple of hours, the next launch dates are the 2nd and 5th of September. Artemis I aboard NASA's SLS (Space Launch System) will be the largest rocket launch since the last flight of the Saturn V back in 1974. Even if you end up waiting up a little while to see the launch, it will be spectacular! Shaun the Sheep is riding along as an ESA mission outreach ambassador. He's undergone complete astronaut training including going for a spin in the Large Diameter Centrifuge which produces up to 8g. You can follow Shaun's complete adventures here. In this practice flight for upcoming human missions, he'll travel on the Orion capsule some 70,000km beyond the Moon, which will be the further away from Earth than any astronaut - both woolly or non-woolly - has even flown.
