Important Notices: It is important for the safety of our students and local residents that all parents who drive to school in the mornings and afternoons are adhering to the road rules. We ask you all to consider the following: - Do not speed on our surrounding roads as many families walk to and from school and this compromises their safety.
- Do not park on the zig zag lines at the front of the school as this impacts on our students safely crossing the road.
- Do not park across the driveways of our neighbours, as this will disrupt access to their private property. As a school we suggest walking or catching public transport to school to where possible. If you have to drive, there is often ample parking spaces a little further away from the school, which may also alleviate the congestion and stress of the morning. We thank you for your cooperation on this matter and your consideration of our local
community.
Late arrival to school results in interruptions to the learning process. Parents are encouraged to have students to school on time. Parents who come to drop their child to school after 8:30am start must come in to the office to sign-in. All children need to be signed in using our new electronic system, which will change the class register to show that they are on school premises.
*Excessive tardiness to school may be referred to the Local Authority for action and possible court referral.
*School Uniform - Children must always come into school with correct full school uniform which includes tie and black shoes (black trainers are not acceptable). If your child comes to school in the incorrect uniform parents will be notified. Please ensure that your child has the correct School21 PE Kit on PE days.
*Equipment - Parents please ensure your child comes into school with all the equipment and food they will need for the day. The front office will not be responsible for taking things to classroom as this is disruptive to children's learning.

creative play, arts and crafts. It will run for 9 weeks and costs £25. If you are interested please email primaryclubs@school21.org.uk. There are still spaces in Drama Club on Monday and Perform Club on Wednesday. If you would like a last minute space please email primaryclubs@school21.org.uk.
Prevent Parent workshopWe would like to invite you to a free workshop run by Newham’s Community Resilience Team, aimed at parents and carers of children across the school. The workshop will be held on Friday 14th May at 3:30pm. It will focus on developing an understanding of extremism, online safety and building resilience, as well as the work that the Community
Resilience team carry out in the local community. We will also discuss ways of protecting young people from interacting with potentially harmful material (such as propaganda), individuals and groups. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions about issues raised or concerns you may have.We hope that you can attend the session and look forward to seeing you there.
School 21 students make the case for OracyThis week a small group of students from Y4 and Y5 were invited to attend a meeting in the committee rooms at parliament with Voice 21. The event, Speaking Up, was hosted by Member of Parliament Emma Hardy who used to be a primary school teacher herself. Many other MPs dropped in and out of the event to contribute their opinions, including Dame Alison Peacock, CEO of the Chartered College of Teachers and Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School College Leaders. The meeting was about making the case for Oracy to have a higher status in education across the country, with the eventual aim of encouraging the set up of a committee of MP's to work on making this a reality. The session was jam-packed with speakers who all talked passionately about the importance of talk in teaching. We were lucky to have two short slots where students spoke. IK made a speech about the importance of Talk Guidelines and recommended that the MPs adopt these to stop unruly arguments during parliament
sessions. Alexia then gave her Spark Speech about the issue of bullying to demonstrate first hand the power of Oracy. After the contributions were made, Ms Hardy opened the discussion and the IK, Alexia, Nyla, Temi, Mimi and Zain held their own amongst a room full of adults, using their talk protocols to build on the argument for teaching Oracy in every school across the UK in a deep discussion that lasted for 2 hours! The feedback from all of the adults involved centered around the
professional attitudes, confidence and eloquence of the children. We are immensely proud of them!
Code Code Code! The Year 5 robotics project continued this week with everyone exploring different coding apps. We used Hopscotch to make a game catching iPhones that were falling into toilets, we practiced text-based coding to program a monkey to find a banana and completed Minecraft themed block coding challenges. As well as this we completed a 'computing unplugged' session where we explored patterns and algorithms by creating pixelated pictures. Finally, we engaged in a debating session about artificial intelligence and its place in the military. Sales
force has generously loaned us 6 Lego Mindstorm kits that we will be experimenting with next week, alongside our Ledo WeDo robotics kits! There are loads of free resources that you can try out at home if you are hooked on coding! PC / Mac Links: Hour of Code - scores of resources designed to teach kids to code https://hourofcode.com/uk/learn Scratch - use block coding to make and experiment with hundreds of community-created games https://scratch.mit.edu/explore/projects/all Phone / Tablet Apps:Hopscotch, Tynker and Scratch Jnr.
Science Projects
Year 5 have been investigating Forces in science, exploring how levers, pulleys and gears operate and how they provide us with mechanical advantages. (Mr Starkey is sending pictures) Year 5 have been reading Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful, a book set in World War 1 and the immediate pre-war period, while in maths students have been learning about percentages. The Year 7 project is examining how medicine and surgery have developed throughout history and the Year 5 project
is looking at robotics and coding.
Primary Maths ChallengeOn Friday 23rd March Akshaya (Year 4), IK and Jacky (Year 5) represented School 21 in the Mayor of London's Primary Maths Challenge tournament at Willowbrook Primary School. At the tournament they competed against other schools in shape, arithmetic and code breaking challenges. Unfortunately they didn't make it through to the final stages but they showed tremendous amounts of grit, spark and professionalism in a really tough competition. They were a real credit to themselves and the school. Thanks also to Ms Shreeram for
accompanying on the trip and Miss Fahie who organised the Maths club.
Outstanding Orienteering!Last Friday, Year 4 spent the day with Mr Hall, a mountain and orienteering expert! They spent the morning learning how to read maps and compasses and then used their feet to measure different distances! The challenging part was when the Year 4's were given a map of our school field and sent off to find different flags that were hidden in really tricky places! The children showed professionalism and grit during the task and it was incredible to see so many pupils heading out to lunch with their maps determined to find every
last flag!
Year 4 Parents, please note payment for the Camping trip is due next Friday. (04/04/17)
