Tomorrow afternoon we are very excited about the Opening Fanfare of the PLC Lighthouse. This will provide an opportunity for all members of our school community to tour the new facilities - including the new Uniform Shop and Lighthouse Café, as well as seeing our girls in action using the teaching and learning spaces. All of the programmes developed for the girls from the Junior School to the Senior School focus on enhancing the following six core functions of wellbeing:
At last night’s opening we heard from Professor Donna Cross from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of WA and the Telethon Kids Institute. Professor Cross, who is also a School Council Member, pointed out that there was now overwhelming research showing the benefits of wellbeing and its positive impact on academic development and growth. We know that school-based social and emotional learning is associated with improved social and emotional skills, behavior and academic achievement. Tomorrow will be a celebration, not only of the opening of the PLC Lighthouse, but the tools and strengths it will give all of our girls to equip them to deal with life’s challenges and to prosper and become inspiring women. I look forward to celebrating with you tomorrow. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Click here for the Lighthouse Grand Opening Progamme. This programme is called the Everest Leadership Initiative which is a Peer Skills Programme recognising that adolescents tend to turn to friends for help. It is designed therefore, to provide the participants with the skills necessary to support their friends. Girls will learn the skills necessary to develop self-understanding and the fostering of positive supportive relationships, to increase skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, goal setting and goal achievement. Topics covered will include:
Girls have been invited to self-nominate as well as to recognise those who already support their friends when they are experiencing difficulties. Detailed information is attached here, together with the student nomination form. This is a wonderful opportunity for girls to be part of a team supported by trained facilitators who will assist each other while also developing a unique set of skills that have lifelong application. If you require further information, please contact Reverend Gary, Daleen Engelbrecht or Sharon Anderson. Feedback invitationOne of the most powerful strategies for improving student learning is feedback. For feedback to be effective, it needs to be “just for them”, given “just in time” and needs to be future focussed; provide them the next steps or the “where to now”. Students are not the only ones to benefit from feedback; seeking feedback to evaluate our own efficacy is essential in helping us all to grow and improve. With this in mind, I invite parents to join me to share your thoughts and feelings about a range of topics in the Senior School. Specifically, I am interested in feedback around homework and Parent-Teacher-Student Evenings as well as our pastoral care systems and practices in general. Small group discussions will be held early next term in my office in the Beth Blackwood Building. An online booking system will be set up, the details of which will be provided in next week’s Links. In the meantime, you might like to give some thought to your experiences in relation to the topics mentioned above and specifically about ideas you may have for improvement. Your feedback will help us to continue to develop in these areas. - Sharon Anderson, Head of Senior School Senior School Co-curricularThe Senior School Co-curricular opportunities options can be downloaded below.
