Dancers' Career Development to Deliver Workshop Programme for English National Ballet School

We are very excited to announce English National Ballet School (ENBS) as the latest school to join Dancers' Career Development’s (DCD) Schools and Conservatoires Programme, where DCD will deliver a programme of workshops for first, second and third year students.

The programme, launching this month with our first workshop for second year students on 26th February, will give the students exclusive access to successful professional dancers who have been supported by DCD, allowing them to pick up vital knowledge for their performance career as well as career transition.

Speakers at previous workshops have included DCD contributing company dancers Jenna Lee, formerly of English National Ballet; Steven McRae, Lauren Cuthbertson and Itziar Mendizabal of The Royal Ballet; Malgorzata Dzierzon, formerly of Rambert; alongside independent contemporary, commercial and musical theatre dancers such as Barnaby Ingram (CATS), Alison Croft (The Phantom of the Opera), Ross Fountain (New Adventures) and Melissa Spiccia (State of Flux Company).

DCD will provide the students with three workshops, one delivered in each year of the students’ time at the school. Students will complete the programme more prepared for their long term career journey and with the knowledge that there is an organisation dedicated to supporting them in that.

Research shows that early preparation for career transition can help avoid the trauma some dancers experience when they retire from professional performance and even lead to a more fulfilling and successful post-performance career.

Samira Saidi, ENBS Director of Dance said: ENBS is renowned for providing outstanding pastoral care for our students, as well as  producing versatile, resilient young dancers.  Understanding the transition from student to professional dancer is part of that provision. What to do post career is equally important and DCD is a unique organisation who specialise in challenging these aspirants to think about life after dance. DCD have been coming to ENBS for a number of years, so this is a logical and  natural development.

Jennifer Curry, DCD Executive Director said: We’re delighted to be delivering our Schools and Conservatoires Programme to ENBS. This builds on our successful partnership with The Royal Ballet School which has already been extended for another year. By embedding the topic of career transition within dance training, it becomes recognised as a natural, inevitable part of a dancer’s career, but one that requires careful thought and preparation.

DCD has been visiting vocational dance schools and conservatoires for over a decade, including The Royal Ballet School and Trinity Laban, providing information about our services for when the students become professional dancers.

ENBS is the official school of English National Ballet, a long-standing and much valued supporter of DCD.

DCD’s Schools and Conservatoires Programme is open to all genres of dance and vocational training institutions across the UK, reflecting the broad spectrum of dancers who we support. If you are a school interested in DCD providing a similar programme for your students, or for more information, please contact Jennifer Curry, Executive Director on 020 7831 1449 or at jennifer@thedcd.org.uk.
