ŌTAKI TO LEVIN NEEDS FOUR LANES BEFORE 2029Kāpiti Coast, 29 January 2019 - The Kāpiti Coast Chamber of Commerce welcomes news the Government will fund four lanes from Ōtaki to Levin but is concerned construction won’t begin until 2025 and be completed in 2029. The four-lane road was originally announced last decade by the previous Government. Funding has been confirmed for the next phase of the Kāpiti Expressway, as part of
a nationwide package announced yesterday, which also includes improvements to the Wellington rail network and refurbishment of the Capital Connection carriages. Jacinda Thorn, Chair of the Kāpiti Coast Chamber of Commerce says while the announcement is a relief to the business community, there is a sense of urgency to begin work as soon as possible, before 2025.
Classic cars glitz and teddy bear fun on Waitangi Day in Foxton
Foxton will be a magnet for car enthusiasts – and kids with teddy bears – on Waitangi Day. All teddy bears in the district are warmly invited to a picnic on the grass of Te Awahou Riverside Cultural Park – under the windmill – and to speed around in their toy cars. At the same time, Harbour Street will feature Hotrod and Classic cars from throughout the region in its riverside reserve – to entertain the adults. There will be plenty to do and see for the whole family, whether that’s going for a ride in the horse-drawn tram,
or listening to a 19th century Dutch street organ. Kids can buy ice creams. There will be live music, and old Dutch wooden ‘Castle Games’ to play. And for those with a serious interest in weaving? The Piriharakeke museum will showcase several master weavers in action, from the Wānanga in Ōtaki.
Horowhenua set to be transformed
THE DECISION TO BRING FORWARD THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ŌTAKI TO NORTH OF LEVIN EXPRESSWAY (O2NL) IS WELCOME NEWS FOR OUR REGION. Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden said the decision provides certainty for residents and for many projects including new residential areas such as a proposal for 2500-homes in south-east Levin, and the transformation of the Levin town centre. “When the Transmission Gully and Ōtaki expressways open, more than 760,000 people will live within an hour’s drive of our beach-side communities. We can expect more families to move here in search of our fantastic lifestyle.”
Nominations invited for Horowhenua Creative Communities CommitteeThe Horowhenua Creative Communities Committee is seeking nominations for new members, following the recent retirement by rotation of three of its previous committee members. In March, the Kāpiti Coast District Council will hold a Summit and community event to kick-start a conversation on the challenges climate change will bring to our coastline. National and local leaders and climate experts will address the Summit conference in the
morning followed by a community event that will combine entertainment, food and family fun with the opportunity to find out more about climate change and its effect on our coastline. Professor James Renwick, Māhina-a-rangi Baker and Professor Bruce Glavovic will be presenting on the day with more speakers to be announced. The Summit launches a significant community engagement project that aims to encourage and empower our communities to become more aware of the impacts of climate change and sea level rise and to take part in developing solutions and pathways for adapting to coming change.
THE 2020 XTERRA WORLD TOUR KICKS OFF ON FEB 1ST WITH A FRESH NEW EDITION TO THE OFF ROAD TRIATHLON SERIES. The XTERRA Wellington Festival embraces the rugged coastal landscape of Kāpiti linking the beach to the mountains in a wickedly West Coast way. Based in Queen Elizabeth Park, this rugged New Zealand beach offers an unpredictable sea, a mountain bike trail with 800m of climbing and an exciting mix of gravel racing and single track downhill "We want XTERRA Wellington to be as inclusive as possible so there is an event for everyone '' said
event director Bengy Barsanti, who lives in Paraparaumu.
The Kāpiti Coast District Council is seeking the community’s input on how our beaches are managed and protected ahead of a review of the Kāpiti Coast District Council Beach Bylaw. Later this year Council will be consulting with the community on the Beach Bylaw
under the Local Government Act, which requires all council bylaws to be reviewed every 10 years. The bylaw creates the rules for Council-managed areas of beach for important things like health and safety, litter, access, vehicles, horses, motorised watercrafts and environmental protections. Kāpiti Coast District Council Environmental Standards Manager Jacquie Muir says hearing from the community ahead of formal consultation will help raise any issues that may need to be addressed early on. “Our beaches are a taonga and play an important part in everyone’s lives and in the district’s identity,” Ms Muir says.
THE MAJOR EVENTS SEASON CONTINUES IN KĀPITI WITH SOMETHING ON OFFER FOR EVERYONE. Kāpiti Coast District Council is supporting a number of new and familiar large scale events this summer and encourages locals to get involved in what will be some serious fun. Council Economic Development Manager Darryn Grant says that with four great events on next weekend there’s something for all the family. The XTERRA Wellington Festival on Saturday 1 February is a completely unique, off road triathlon, duathlon and trail running experience. “Whether you’re planning to participate in XTERRA or be a spectator this is going to be a fantastic event,” Mr Grant says.
