The Citizen Newspaper supports Responsible T.V. Licensing The below advertisement
appeared in the Strathfield local newspaper The Citizen, on 13 February 1958, encouraging people to apply for a television license. Television was launched in Australia in 1956 and from 1 January 1957, television viewers were required to pay 5 pounds annually to fund the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC). Non-payment was a punishable offence with fines of up to 50 pounds. The licence was abolished in September 1974 by the federal Labor Whitlam Government.
