2014 has been a good year for cargo at Brussels Airport. After years of declining figures, followed by some stagnating volumes, we saw again strong growth in 2014. According to ACI figures, BRU grew 9%, making it one of the strongest growing major airports in Europe. Even more important is the progress BRUcargo is making in other fields: from the strengthening as leading pharma gateway over new full cargo customers to several new real estate projects.
Further strong growth is expected in 2015, and the first results in January confirm this prognosis. Moreover, Brussels Airport and the BRUcargo community will further invest in different projects related to pharmaceuticals and perishables as a second round of IATA CEIV pharma should be launched and a project for temperature controlled and monitored ramp transport will be initiated. The BRUcargo Secured Gateway project will also be rolled out further with increased security on BRUcargo and a cargo community system in the cloud becoming operational in 2015. All this work is done in good cooperation with the different organisations at BRUcargo: handlers, airlines and forwarders.
Collaborating with all partners and stakeholders at BRUcargo, cargo will be handled even faster and more efficiently to more destinations in the world! And together we will continue, at exhibitions and conferences worldwide, to keep promoting Brussels Airport and BRUcargo as an important and interesting gateway for cargo in Europe.

Together with a selection of BRUcargo partners, for the first time we organised our pavilion style booth at this leading event for perishable professionals from all over the world, each year held in Berlin. It turned out to be a great success for all partners and commitments for next year’s edition have already been made.
More then ever we will focus on strengthening the perishable flows through our airport, optimising communication with the different players and facilitating on process flows, in order to continue to develop Brussels Airport as flexible and efficient perishable hub into the rest of Europe.

You haven’t noticed? Qatar Airways increased the number of flights from 4 to 8. With connections from Entebbe and Nairobi, East Africa already was part of the schedule programme. By adding Accra to the list, now the Western part of Africa is also connected and via BRU Perishables find their way into the Western European consumer market.
Brussels Airport is also very happy that Qatar Airways values our position as preferred pharma gateway, as it has launched twice weekly A330 freighters to Doha since Wednesday, January 28th. With these flights Qatar Airways kicked off its new “Pharma Express” service, that will connect two key pharma origins, Brussels and Basel, with the expanding Qatar Airways' network, through the state-of-the-art hub in Doha.

Setting the pharma handling standard

Other airport communities are recognizing the added value of the certification programme and are setting up similar group certifications. At BRUcargo we can proudly say that we don’t meet the global pharma handling standards…we set them, in collaboration with IATA.
Based on the interest from other BRUcargo based companies, we are now launching a second wave of certifications with forwarders and trucking companies. As a result the majority of the pharma volumes handled at Brussels Airport will be handled in a fully CEIV pharma GDP certified cool chain, by the end of this year.
