Throwback ThursdayRobert Henry BeardsmoreAccountant, Major (later Colonel) Robert Beardsmore of Elouera, 75 Albert Road Strathfield had a distinguished military career. In January 1915 he was appointed to command the garrison at Rabaul. At the disastrous Battle of Fromelles in July 1916 he was wounded early in the fighting but continued to lead his men for ten hours, digging trenches across No Man’s Land. He earned the Distinguished Service Order: ‘the coolness and courage displayed in remaining at his post for so many hours after being wounded had a great influence on the work of his men.’ Beardsmore was later promoted to lieutenant colonel.
