An inside source for all things independent. Where we share tips of the trade and delve into insights that move production forward. Today's talk: Genre SubversionWe see it all the time, the mixing of genres to create something new. Horror comedy, sci-fi noir, and romantic comedy just to name a few. But what happens when you want to create something new within these parameters? For writers, you must learn to subvert the genre. Now that doesn't mean tricking your audience every chance you get and leading them astray with misinformation, instead you must go against the expectations of convention. Meaning plot beats, themes, characters or tropes must find some new way to subvert viewers expectations when they think they know what will happen. Let's face it, we've all seen hundreds of horror comedies where the same jump scare happens time and time again and the killer is always someone's boyfriend. However, sometimes movies like Scream come along and change the genre forever. Not only for it's iconic opening scene, but the twist (spoiler alert) that Ghostface was actually two different people- one of them being the boyfriend. Slashers predominately had one killer and one killer only, but Scream broke all the rules. No matter what genre you want to write in, it's important to learn the rules first and foremost. It makes breaking them that much easier (and fun)! Experiment with different tropes, they're tropes for a reason after all. Then, find new ways to turn them on their head and make something new. Subversion is a powerful tool and when done correctly, can change the genre forever.
