Update
Hello and welcome! For those that might not know me, I’m Ming Tang, Chief Data and Analytics Officer at NHS England and I’m responsible for the strategic development of data and analytics capability across the NHS. I want to start by sharing our plans for this exciting new update for our data and analytics community, and let you know how you can get involved in shaping the content ahead of the launch of our first full edition.
The aim of this is to share the work that we're doing around professionalisation, and in particular covering topics which are key to you and your career development, such as the competency framework. We will also address any issues that might be impacting your work, discuss national developments in the profession that are of interest to you, and share a range of updates from colleagues within the data and analytics community. We would love you to get involved in this update, shaping the content and letting us know what you think. You can do this by dropping us a line at england.analystx@nhs.net. Look out for the short questionnaire below and take some time to tell us what you'd like to hear more about. As you can see below I have shared a little bit about myself, so you know more about me and my role. Over the coming months I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your teams, and all of the brilliant work that you do to bring data and analytics into our work across health and care. A bit about me; I am the Chief Data and Analytics Officer for NHS England and am responsible for strategic development of data and analytics capability across NHS. I have worked in the NHS since October 2009 and last year I was named the most
influential person in data and analytics in DataIQ’s top 100 and awarded Data and Analytics Leader of the Year for transforming the way data and analytics is perceived across the health and care service. I work with an amazing wider team that provides NHS England with the resources to support system transformation, strategic information assets, digital tools and analysis to underpin policy development and predictive capabilities to enhance decision making and improve health and care services.

Who am I? Help us choose our name
As you can see from the title of this month’s edition, we’ve called this the Data Professionalisation Update because this will be your first port of call for all things professionalisation within the data and analytics community across the health and care sector. But it doesn't have to be that!
If you have any name suggestions or ideas on what to call it, please do send them through to england.analystx@nhs.net . This update is for you so we’d love to hear your thoughts!
Hi, I’m Sarah Blundell, Lead for Analytical Development at NHS England.
Many of you may already know me as I’ve been working in data and analysis roles within healthcare over the past 15 years, but for those of you that don’t, I had the pleasure of being involved in the creation of the AnalystX community and am now the workstream lead for Communities, Networks and Learning.
I am also co-creator of the Analytical Learning Exchange; a free online resource that provides analytical and technical learning material to help analysts access and broaden their skill base. I also lead on the professionalisation of data and analytics workstream across Health and Care and I’m passionate about promoting lifelong learning.
Competency FrameworkWhat we've done so far: As many of you will be aware, we have been working on a framework to support staff working across data and analytics to identify what standards you are expected to be working to, what that means in practical terms, and what levels you need to meet in order to take the next steps in your career progression. Where we are now: We have completed the first phase of this work and we are now testing the framework. This means testing it within the system, capturing people’s requirements on how it can be used for staff recruitment, training and development and also for professional registration. What next: There was a series of workshops over August to share plans about on-site testing and to discuss setting up three cohorts of on-site testing with organisations across the country. These cohorts will take place through September and October. To see the work that's been done to date, check out the Competency Framework area on the AnalystX NHSFutures site where there is all the background information, including a link to the framework itself and the previous testing stage. There's also a dedicated Beta Testing Zone which has all
the materials from the recent onsite testing workshops, including a recording of the session if you missed it. If you're not already a member of the workspace, it's easy to join, just click on the blue button on the front page to request to join. If you would like to know more about the framework or onsite testing please contact: Lead for Analytical Development, Sarah Blundell, at sarahblundell@nhs.net
Observatory State of the Nation Report- What we've done so far: In March we sent out the first annual workforce survey of data and analytics professionals across health and care. This was to help us develop an understanding of who we are as a profession, what we do and how we're doing in terms of teams, spread, numbers etc.
- Where we are now: We now have the responses of 118
data teams and these include representatives from local, regional and national NHS and local authorities.
- What next: The report for this first survey is due to be published in September 2022.
- What do I need to know: Keep an eye out for information coming directly to you about the report and its findings including a mini-huddle in September (see below).
