Dear Friend of PLC

Interested to know what a day in the life of the PLC Lighthouse looks like? Chonny James, PLC's Director of Wellbeing gives us an inside look.

It’s hard to believe we only opened the Lighthouse in April of this year. As we continue to grow our practices with this amazing new building, it’s also timely to reflect on how the Lighthouse has opened our eyes to new opportunities and already influenced our behaviours.

Monday 12 November
Before School

The Lighthouse opens its doors at 6.00 am. Sophie, one of our Lighthouse reception staff members, turns on the diffuser and the scent of lemon grass begins wafting through the building, signalling the start of a new week. Our first class of the day, at 7.00 am, is a fitness class for Years 7 – 12 students who are put through their paces using the equipment in the circuit and cardio rooms by instructor Liv from O2 Active. Meanwhile, some of our Year 10 students sign in to use the cardio equipment and complete their own exercise regime.

Jo Norcott, our Lighthouse Physio, is in the consultants’ room treating students who have booked appointments and can be seen showing them how to complete their rehab programme using the equipment in the Fitness Centre. Down in the Lighthouse Café, a group of students are enjoying the famous warmed Banana Bread whilst huddled around a table playing a game of Connect 4. Our Wellbeing Captain, Bella, pops in to finalise her plans for recognising World Kindness Day the following day.

During School
Our Year 8s hustle into the studios for their Lighthouse Learning lesson. In Ms Dorrington’s class they are discussing helpful thinking and self-talk from the SenseAbility programme, which explains that while we can’t control all of the events in our lives, we can control how we think about them and, consequently, how we feel about them and what we do as a result.

The Year 4 students have ventured over from the Junior School and are using the Movement Room to practise their end of year assembly dance item. They happily offer to perform their ‘work in progress routine’ to the delight of a group of Old Collegians who were visiting the Lighthouse from overseas.......

Meet Nicole Agar, one of PLC's Senior School Psychologists.

Nicole has over 20 years experience as a Registered Psychologist and has worked in both private and public schools, locally and overseas.

"As a former PLC student, I am truly grateful for the warm welcome I have received back into the School and the opportunity to support students in an environment I am so fondly familiar with".

As a Senior School Psychologist, Nicole is based in the Lighthouse three days per week. Her focus is on assisting girls in Years 7 - 9 to maximise their mental health and wellbeing and achieve their goals here at school and beyond.

Who inspires you most?

A close friend was involved in a critical farm incident several years ago. He suffered near fatal injuries and was told by medical specialists he would never walk again. Witnessing his determination and positive mindset shape his recovery journey has been truly awe inspiring and he now lives a very meaningful life.

This has prompted me to realise the importance of being grateful for all that surrounds us. As such, I am committed to engaging in a healthy lifestyle by exercising in nature and enjoying the outdoors, treasuring family time and social connectedness and ‘getting on with life’. As a mother of young daughters, I am passionate about both ‘being in the moment’ and enabling our young women to embrace all that is possible for them through a growth mindset.

What is the best part of your job?

Empowering the wonderful students of PLC  to become the best versions of themselves and to encourage them to implement small changes to develop mental fitness and healthy habits for lifelong wellbeing. I love working with the energised team at the Lighthouse in an environment that promotes wellbeing ideals that reflect my own.
