Scholarship helps graduate student focus on research
Aaron van der Leek received a $7,500 scholarship from the Department of Pediatrics.
Aaron van der Leek is one of three graduate students who received a Pediatric Recruitment Scholarship this year. Hossein Doosti (supervisor Jerome Yager), Claudia Holody (supervisor Stephanie Bourque) and van der Leek were each awarded $7,500. van der Leek chose the University of Alberta for his graduate program because he had worked with his supervisor, Anita Kozyrskyj, previously during his undergraduate degree. As a bonus, the university swim team is a draw for him! He decided on pediatrics because he’s always gravitated to working with children. “They are always happy and resilient,” he says. van der Leek is focusing his research on immunoglobulin A levels in children in relation to allergies and
atopic disease. His father is an allergist and he believes this career path runs in the family. van der Leek has never received a scholarship of this size before and is grateful for the award. “It helps me focus on my research. It’s nice to be recognized by the department I would like to be part of some day,” he says.

children when they become adults.
