Throwback ThursdayQantas Pilot, Lester BrainAs Qantas celebrates its centenary this month, we remember the local boy who became its Chief Pilot in 1930. Born in Forbes in 1903, Lester Brain spent his childhood in Ashfield and Enfield, training with the RAAF before joining Qantas in 1924. He gained fame (and the Air Force Cross) in 1929 after discovering airmen, Moir and Owen, missing in Arnhem Land. Just a month earlier he had located the Kookaburra at Wave Hill, NT although her pilots, Anderson and Hitchcock had perished from thirst. In July 1930 Brain married Constance Brownhill of Strathfield. Captain Moir was his best man. Image Courtesy of the State Library of NSW |
