Homebush BayThere are a number of shipwrecks still visible in Homebush Bay, remnants of the former use of the area as a ship-breaking yard. One ship is the steel broom defence vessel HMAS Karangi. It was built at Cockatoo Island and launched in 1941 before being sent north to assist in the defence of Darwin. The ship was present during the first Japanese bombing raid on 19 February 1942. It was partially scrapped in 1966, and the remains moved to Homebush Bay for breaking up. The wrecks can be viewed from the shore from Bennelong Road at Homebush Bay and Bicentennial Park.
