Dear

Meet the Team - Emily Lockhart

Meet Emily Lockhart, PLC's new Head of Lighthouse Curriculum. We asked Emily a few questions to get to know her better!

What would you like to achieve at PLC this year?

I am working on developing a ‘Lighthouse Curriculum’ which will detail all the work PLC does from Pre-K to Year 12 in the field of health and wellbeing. By the end of this year, I hope to ensure it is developmentally appropriate as it transitions students from early childhood, through childhood into adolescence and then finally adulthood.

What is the best part of your job?

Working with young people to help make a difference. I love to hear their stories and give them advice as they develop and grow through their teenage years. The real joy comes from seeing students journey from childhood and graduate at the end of Year 12 as mature, well-rounded and resilient young people.

Who inspires you most?

My PhD supervisor inspires me the most; she has been my mentor for nearly 20 years (prior to her being my supervisor). She has shown me how to be a strong woman at work and at home with my family. She shows compassion and kindness to those around her, while also being an inspirational leader, academic and friend. Having her in my life gives me confidence to be strong, courageous and work hard, while being caring, showing empathy and kindness.

Sleep Awareness Week

As well as Make a Difference Week, it is also Sleep Awareness Week next week! This year’s theme “Begin with Sleep” highlights the importance of good sleep health for individuals to best achieve their personal, family and professional goals.

PLC's Civics and Social Justice Captain, Lucy Alderson (Year 12) explains why napping is beneficial and offers tips for beginners.

The Art of Napping by Lucy Alderson (Year 12)

Last year, I attended a Lighthouse workshop and information session by Naptivist and Personal Sustainability Specialist, Thea O'Connor. I took everything I learnt on board and it's changed my life! I would like to share what I learnt with you.

Napping is something I do almost every day to help me function effectively. Last year I fell into a stage where I was often fatigued. High demands on my mind and body from sports training and study prevented me from sleeping the eight to ten hours we are suggested to have per night.

That’s when I decided to try napping, and now it is a part of my daily routine!

I started taking a 20 - 30 minute nap after school, which allowed my brain to function better, leading to effective study.
