Hotham presents the True Spirit of Alpine Australia run MHARMB has teamed up with Running Wild to create the first ever True Spirit of Alpine Australia run, which will kick off during the annual Great Alpine Running Festival between 18 November and 19 November 2017. The run celebrates Mount Hotham’s ‘True Spirit of Alpine Australia’ campaign, positioning Mt Hotham as the highest alpine village with the most down-to-earth people, and the place to visit for an authentic ‘Aussie’ experience. Two main runs with various distances will showcase Mt Hotham’s green season with a ‘Twilight Run’ of 3.5km and 10km, and the 25km and 40km Trail Runs. The runs represent the magic of the alpine environment, getting back to nature, and providing something unique for the naturally curious and the naturally adventurous. Click below to register. Alpine Policing increased its capacity at Mt Hotham over winter Resources from Melbourne’s Operations Response Unit (ORU) helped ease the capacity for local police in the alpine environment over winter. The Alpine Policing Committee was established to look into resourcing for the alpine resorts by providing resources to supplement local police who, over the years, have acted as the main police presence at Mt Hotham. This new approach has enabled police to maintain their resources in the valley throughout the declared winter season, while still providing a presence for the mountain. More police are now being trained for alpine conditions in instances of blizzards, searches and accidents, while also providing further support and control over incidences that may occur on the Great Alpine Road. Wangaratta Local Area Commander, Inspector Kerrie Hicks, said that it was great to see both areas of Victoria Police working collaborative together and sharing and learning new skills. “It is a good opportunity for our local members to work closely with members from ORU, and our local members have been able to teach them all about the alpine environment,” Ms Hicks said. “We have been able to maintain our service delivery off-mountain, and we have ongoing support from ORU to achieve increased capacity. “We enjoyed a fantastic working relationship with the Mt Hotham RMB’s CEO Jon Hutchins and his team. During emergencies we work closely with, and really value the skills of, the Ski Patrol and Bill Barker with his avalanche experience. “Our shared objective for the 2017 season has been community safety, balanced with wanting businesses to thrive and people to do well. This is essential to wellbeing and supports community resilience and social cohesion." Winter season 2017 highlights Mt Hotham turned its lift operations off and farewelled a fantastic season on Sunday 8th October 2017, with many highlights to reflect on. The alpine resort has seen its biggest season in 17 years, with an overall accumulated snowfall of 473cm and a current natural snow base of 120cm which saw the resort remain open for an extra week. The final piece of the snowmaking masterplan clicked into place this summer with the completion of works on the Summit and twelve new guns installed, allowing the Summit to operate for Opening Weekend. The launch of the True Spirit of Alpine Australia awareness campaign in June branded the mountain as Australia’s highest alpine village with the most down-to-earth people, assisting with new visitors to the resort. Mt Hotham Resort Management Board’s Chief Executive Officer Jon Hutchins was pleased with the outcome saying, “It was successful at attracting new visitors to the mountain and saw 31 million digital impressions, five times the population of Victoria.” Mt Hotham delivered in September with great weather conditions, good snow and a calendar of events which saw the Deck Party, Retro Day, Chicks with Stix and the Rail Jam take place, and other events throughout the month. Unique attractions like Alpine Nature Experience and Hotham 365 was an opportunity to showcase alternative winter products for guests. The Resort Management Board encourages new operators to approach them for alternative winter activities.
