We've all seen the movies - hunk of space rock hurtling towards and a bunch of has-been astronauts strap themselves into rocket, risking their necks to save us all. The Earth has been impacted by a vast number of significant objects from space. Luckily there's no known objects in the Solar System which pose a threat to Earth on a global scale like the Chicxulub meteor that impacted near Mexico some 66 million years ago which contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The problem is that there are thousands of small, rocky objects whizzing around the Solar System. Some will approach or hit the Earth unknown to us, like the Chelyabinsk meteor. This struck Russia in 2013, releasing energy roughly equal to a 400 kiloton nuclear blast that caused widespread injury and destruction. But what could we do if we found an object in space headed our way? This coming weekend NASA intends to slam a small space probe into a rocky body to see if its orbit can be changed. Could technology like this save Earth from a future impact? If you're after a small portable, Wi-Fi controlled astrophotography mount then book a spot for our workshops at the BINTEL showroom in Glebe on the 1st Oct running from 10m to 3pm. We will be comparing the abilities of the Benro Polaris star tracking platform and the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTi mount. Topics covered include how to connect your camera to a telescope, photographing the Milky Way and how to use a small telescope like the RedCat 51 or Sky-Watcher EVOLUX on a star tracker mount. The workshop will also touch on image processing. Please note this event is free, but you will need to book a spot via the Facebook link below - Have a look through the new Swarovski STC and ATC spotting scopes at BINTEL - exclusive preview this week.Swarovski STC and ATC spotting scopes on display at BITNEL - coming soon for $2999 The new Swarovski STC and ATC compact spotting scopes are on display exclusively at BINTEL for the coming week. The ASRC is the primary annual meeting for Australian researchers in space science and technology. A major lecture to mark the conference is free and open to the public. Have you seen researchers spending time on the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, USA? This famous facility is where people live and learn about how to survive on extended space missions. Multiple astronauts have completed simulated missions at MDRS prior to their missions to the ISS. The southern hemisphere version is now going to be built in Australia. Thanks for everyone who visited BINTEL at the Macquarie University Astronomy Open NightIt was great to be back at the Macquarie University Astronomy Open after a long break. BINTEL gave away dozens of Celestron telescopes and many went to families. We also did a live stream of Jupiter, Saturn and deep-sky objects from the observatory back to a large monitor at the stand. Thanks to the folk at Macquarie Uni and we're looking forward to 2023! Next time....Why are some telescopes and binoculars of the same size and type more expensive and do they really offer better views? |
