It's good news that people have been quick to take up the offer of a life-saving COVID jab – with a total of 2.08 million top ups administered so far across England. We hope many of you are taking up your COVID-19 booster vaccine, as well as the offer of a free flu vaccination on the NHS. Vaccines have built a strong wall of defence and one of our best ways of keeping the virus at bay is the NHS booster campaign. As a reminder, from 11 November 2021, all staff entering a care home need to have a COVID-19 vaccination, unless exempt. Please do take up the offer to protect yourself, your colleagues and your patients. Details were shared in our last bulletin. We are proud to be celebrating Black History Month this October and we've shared with you some of the activities that the NHS is organising. Next month we will be observing Mouth Cancer Action Month. Dental professionals are in a unique position to help combat mouth cancer, and we have included a number of resources which can support early diagnosis and prevention. Best wishes and thanks, Sara and Ed Sara Hurley Ed Waller PPE provision to health and social careDHSC is consulting on whether to extend the provision of free PPE to the health and care sector beyond 31 March. NHS and social care colleagues can provide feedback online until Sunday 31 October. Black History Month October 2021We are proud to be celebrating Black History Month this October. This time last year, Funmi Oluwajana wrote an insightful piece on the General Dental Council's website about identity and leadership in dentistry and she has followed this up with her reflections 12 months on. Please do give these a read. You can also sign up to Race Ahead. As the NHS is the largest employer of people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in the country and across Europe, the objective of Race Ahead will be to tackle the workplace discrimination that some of our staff and colleagues continue to face. Race Ahead will be a series of conversations and panel discussions on Wednesday 6 and Tuesdays, 12, 19 and 26 October, focused on the specific actions we can all take to improve the outcomes and experiences of our staff. Get ready for Mouth Cancer Action MonthNovember is Mouth Cancer Action Month, a campaign spearheaded by the Oral Health Foundation and the Mouth Cancer Foundation which aims to save lives by promoting prevention and early detection of oral cancers. Women's safety and the role of dental teamsThe distressing circumstances surrounding the deaths of Sarah Everard, Sabina Nessa and sadly many other women have shone further light on the issue of women's safety in our society. Dental teams can play an important role in identifying signs of domestic abuse and supporting potential survivors and victims. In February's special focus bulletin we brought together the key things NHS dental teams need to know. Please do share this bulletin with your colleagues and discuss the contents with your teams. By Word of Mouth ... the colleagues we're all talking about! This week, we would like to highlight the great work of Community Dental Services CIC and their "Driving for Change" project. The social enterprise, which provides community dental services to the NHS, has launched a repurposed London bus to support the dental and oral health needs of homeless people in London. The buses will operate a dental clinic alongside other direct interventions for those in need such as GP consultations, showers and haircuts, digital and financial literacy, employment support - all vital services for vulnerable homeless people. Lorraine Mattis, Director of Transformation, was at the launch event in London and said "We are delighted to be part of the Driving For Change initiative, bringing much needed oral health care directly to homeless people building on our experience in mobile dentistry and supporting the oral health of vulnerable people.
