March 23, 2022

Dear member,

Finally, after two long years, it seems as if the cloud of covid is behind us. We are getting back to enjoying in-person events with each other and other community members. The month of March was very busy for us. We had a lot of fun at the AI in healthcare symposium and also hosted the YEG Innovation Tour prior to the Life Science Investment Summit. In-person events are great for our mental health and the health of our community. As Nicole, this week’s Meet our Community member says, “I think there needs to be more innovation in (mental health) space as we transition back to the "normal" state of the world after the pandemic”.

However, as we transition, we cannot ignore the power of online events. I am delighted to share with you that, following the success of our collaborative event with the University of Alberta Library and the Edmonton Public Library in February, we are bringing forth Part 2 featuring a case workshop, where our librarians will walk you through a health entrepreneur’s journey. Seats are limited so I highly encourage you to sign up as soon as possible for this free online workshop.

As we continue to provide support to our community, we are looking to expand our team. We have an exciting opportunity for an Event Coordinator to join our dynamic team. This person loves event planning, getting the details right, and making sure everyone has a fantastic time! If you or someone you know fits the bill, we want to hear from you. Apply through the University of Alberta careers page here.

Finally, thanks to all of you for taking the time to read our digest and giving us constructive feedback. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us. Please forward the digest to your network to support the momentum in health innovation across Alberta.

Meet our Community

Nicole Sanchez

Co-Founder at Ruth

1. What does health innovation/ innovation in health mean to you?

It means having adequate resources to improve my health and those around me.

2. In your opinion, what is the state of the health innovation ecosystem in Alberta, Canada and globally?

I think there's been a lot of innovation in the space but there is still so much more we can do to help everyone improve their physical and mental health and well-being. Especially for mental health, I think there needs to be more innovation in this space as we transition back to the "normal" state of the world after the pandemic.

3. What motivated you to join the Health Innovation Hub?

For us, we wanted to connect with the health community and the Health Hub did just that. We had hoped to gain mentors and resources that will help us become better entrepreneurs, so we joined the Health Innovation Hub. We've been given the opportunity to be connected with amazing startups and be a part of a community that fosters health innovation here in Edmonton.

4. How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

I'm a passionate entrepreneur who wants to make an impact.

5. What is the one thing that you are most excited about right now?

I am really excited to see the startup community continually growing. The resources that Edmonton entrepreneurs have now is rapidly increasing and therefore encourages more entrepreneurs to take the leap which is really exciting!
